Happy Championship Saturday everyone, hopefully EP can pull off the win tonight! But for now we have the semi finals.
1971 Kellogg Cup Super Series; Semi Finals
Roseau Stars vs New Ulm Bavarians
Roseau started off strong, getting off to a 1-0 lead after one. The Bavarians come out for the second and turned the tides in their favor, getting a couple nice bounced leading to scoring chances. New Ulm found themselves up 2-1 as the second came to a close. The third started off slow with a lot of whistles, but it opened up after a Roseau penalty. New Ulm was able to get a pass through the slot for a one timer that beat the goalie, giving the diamonds a two goal lead with 12:17 left in the game. Roseau called a timeout to collect themselves and set a game plan. The Stars were not used to trailing and seemed anxious. They went all out on attack, pinching at the point to keep the puck in the offensive zone despite the risk. A shot from the point got through a screen and past the Bavarian goalie with under 5 minutes to go, giving the game new life. Roseau continued to grind in the New Ulm zone, pulling their goalie with a minute left. Bavarians were throwing themselves in the way of every shot attempt, trying their hardest to stop any shot attempts from even getting to the net. We got to the final ten seconds and a shot was blocked, sending it to the corner where a Bavarian just pinned it against the boards, killing the clock until the final horn sounded. New Ulm has knocked off the top seeded Roseau Stars and advances to their first Kellogg Cup Final with a 3-2 win!
Edina Cake Eaters vs East Grand Forks Pointers
Edina got the scoring started early, finding the back of the net just 93 seconds into the game. EGF tied it up not long after, but Edina was buzzing in the final 5 minutes of the first, netting two more goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second. The second was a much less active period, ending with the score unchanged. The third was a return to the first, high tempo and high scoring. The Pointers pulled to within one with a snipe right off a faceoff, but once again the Cake Eaters responded in quick succession to keep the 2 goal cushion. Edina pulled away around the midway point of the third on a nifty passing play leading to a goal. East Grand Forks didn't back down though, continuing to work in the gritty areas and getting rewarded by batting a rebound past the Edina goalie to get back to within two. When the final horn sounded the Cake Eaters swarmed their goalie in celebration, advancing to their first Kellogg Cup Final with a 5-3 win over East Grand Forks.
Will the Diamonds continue to thrive under pressure? Or will Edina finally have their cake and eat it too?
Let me know what you think, comments are appreciated!

So we are GUARANTEED a first-time Kellogg Cup Champion...though I'm hopin' it's New Ulm (to be the Blue Earth's first Cup winners), I'd also be happy to see Edina finally take it home.

1971 Kellogg Cup Final
1st Period
EDA - 0
NU - 2
New Ulm came out flying in the first, finding the back of the net in the first five minutes on an odd man rush. The Bavarians continued to control the tempo, spending the majority of the period in the Cake Eaters half of the ice. The diamonds efforts payed off, drawing a powerplay with 6:11 to go in the opening period. New Ulm set up the attack, firing everything on goal. A shot from the boards took a deflection off of an Edina players stick, taking an unfortunate deflection for the Cake Eaters as the puck ricocheted over his goalie's shoulder and in to give New Ulm a 2 goal lead.
2nd Period
EDA - 0
NU - 2
Things slowed down drastically in the second. Frequent icings and offsides slowed the pace to a crawl and neither side was able to get much of anything going, sending us to the third with New Ulm in the driver seat up 2-0.
3rd Period
EDA - 1
NU - 3
It was now or never for the Cake Eaters who came out for the third looking determined. Unlike the second, things opened up dramatically in the third, with both teams getting a number of rush chances. Edina broke out of their zone 7 minutes in, threading the needle with a home run pass to Ben Hankinson who was all alone on a breakaway. Hankinson doesn't miss these chances, burying it five hole to bring his team to within one. The momentum swung in favor of Edina for the next few minutes, but New Ulm was able to hold off the attack, maintaining their 2-1 lead. The clock ticked down to the final minute and Edina was forced to pull their goalie to get the extra skater in a last ditch effort to force overtime. Edina set up in the Bavarians zone, getting a grade a one time chance from the slot that was denied by the diamonds goalkeeper and promptly iced by his defenceman. New Ulm called a timeout to give their players a rest. The draw was won by the diamonds who flipped it out of the zone, but not hard enough for icing. Edina carried the puck through the neutral zone with under 40 seconds left, pulling into the New Ulm zone and firing a shot from the high circle. It was blocked and gathered by a Bavarian who chipped it past the pinching d man. He was all alone with the other defenseman out of reach. He got to the red line and dumped the puck in on goal, clinching the Kellogg Cup for the New Ulm Bavarians!
The Tschida Trophy was awarded to Edina's Ben Hankinson, this is his second time winning the award.

Finally, the Diamonds take home the Kellogg Cup! I'm glad it was them and not Edina. Maybe the Pointers will be next.

The Diamonds did it! First Blue Earth League team to win the Cup (of the MAHL's current leagues, only the Southwest Hockey Association has yet to have a team win it...but they just finished their second year of existence).
All in all, this was a LOVELY Super Series in specific and playoffs in general...bring on the offseason!

I hope everyone is ready, I have been hinting at something big coming up for what seems like a year now and I'm thrilled to say that the time has finally come!
The upcoming offseason is the biggest in MAHL history and will change the league forever. It is going to be quite a long offseason compared to past seasons and I hope to have everything ready in the next couple days!
