Re: AltFL - Design Thread

Yeah, I'm not mad at anyone really, just general frustration with Charlotte's national standing. It's a large city (17th largest in the country, 2nd largest in the SE after Jacksonville) and has been the fastest growing for like a decade and a half at this point. The Philly-Pittsburgh example comes from Charlotte and Raleigh's rivalry, both distinct areas with their own culture and stuff. I'll stop after this, and I apologize for dragging the thread off-topic. I think most of us can understand wanting to defend our city and its culture, but I promise I'll stop it here. Sorry about that, everyone.

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

No worries, totally understandable.  Well we have a ton of names to choose from for Charlotte so we will have to see.

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

Birmingham - I think the suggestions beat anything I can think of.
Boston Scholars - Sounds mean and gives a classic name to the city who had the first college in North America. (Harvard was founded in 1636)
Buffalo Wings - I know a defunct roller hockey team had this name in a league that no longer exists, but come on! First buffalo wing was served in 1964 at a buffalo restaurant called the Anchor Bar. This might have already been suggested too.
Chicago River Men - Come on guys, quit with the mob. Chicago sanitation department literally reversed the flow of the Chicago River to save the city! Without that there would be no Chicago. Also love the end result of St. Louis having to deal with all of Chicago's waste water. It is a fascinating story.
Dallas - Pegasus should be the name of this team and nothing else is right. The neon theme with a rare name would be dominant. Backing Sportsfan on this. They underplayed it by calling it just a statue, but look it up. It is a monstrous neon sign that was only relocated because it was a staple of the city. Imagine seeing that on top of Mobile's Magnolia building when it called the sky its home. I mean, they even replaced the thing with a new pegasus. Dallas = Red Horse
Charlotte - I do not know enough about the city unless you want a generic Queen City name out of me. I'll trust the community on this one too.

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

And I feel the discussion, especially QCS's viewpoint, is very good for us. Those of us that read what he said, as a representative of said city, may take that into account when we vote. It certainly will affect the way I vote for some of the more specific pirate names on the list. I know that when it comes time for the most local city that I know the most about, Milwaukee, I'll want to see things that are relevant, or generic that many high schools use (Tigers, Bulldogs, Wildcats, Bears, etc.)

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

The votes will decide which opinion/school of thought prevails...now let's get back to nominations, please.

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

Birmingham Wizards - Play on the cities nickname "The Magic City"

Boston Beaneaters - Boston is Beantown and I think this could be a cool, unique name for a team from there. This was used by a baseball team in Boston back in the late 1890s so I think it should be ok to use.

Buffalo Royals - Buffalo is nicknamed the "Queen City of the Lakes" and their flag is blue and white.

Charlotte Swarm - Play on the Hornets Nest nickname without being directly called the Hornets.

Chicago Cyclones - Someone already said this but I think it works good for the Windy City.

Dallas Moguls - No real reason, just thought the name fit and all the best suggestions were already said.

Someone mentioned Wizards being mistaken in the south for something much more sinister earlier, I also think Swarm was mentioned already.

Yeah I had Swarm and I had mentioned the thing about the Wizards.

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

Yeah I'd avoid any kind of magician names for Birmingham (and even Charlotte and Nashville) because of the KKK.

Re: AltFL - Design Thread

I also like Birmingham Steel.

I'm torn on Beaneaters--I like the throwback, but it just doesn't seem to "fit" the era. With that said, I'll suggest the Boston Rebels, for rather obvious reasons.

I'd go for Buffalo Steers, again referencing cattle.

Charlotte Royals would be pretty good for them, considering it's the Queen City.

I will second Chicago Cyclones.

Because of the weather of Texas and it's kinda cool, I suggest the Dallas Flames.
