Re: XFL 2020

“XFL Finds First Star in Week 5”

March 10, 2020

Arlington, TX - Iron Quarterback Chris Streveler was the standout, throwing for 272 yards and four touchdowns on 23-for-39 passing. Streveler's performance was complemented by Birmingham's defense, which didn't allow a touchdown in the final 39 minutes of the game and shut out the Renegades in the second half. Dallas, missing starting quarterback Landry Jones because of an injury, benched backup Dalton Sturm in the second half. Sturm looked good early, pushing the Renegades to a 14-6 lead with a pair of touchdowns — one on the air and one on the ground. But Birmingham took the lead just before halftime and never looked back winning, 37-17.

“All Eyes on the XFL”

March 17, 2020

Washington, DC - With the NBA, NCAA, MLB, NHL and Nascar all halting their seasons, Vince McMahon wanted all eyes on the XFL for the weekend and he got exactly that.  All six of the league's Week 6 games were amongst the top ten most watched television broadcasts for the week.

In the game of the week, Cardale Jones returned to the starting line-up for the Washington DC Defenders, and the team picked up their first victory of the season.  With the recent additions of CFL veterans to the offensive line, Head Coach Pep Hamilton was able to unleash his deep vertical passing attack for the first time this season and Jones delivered.  Cardale threw for 325 yards and 4 scores on the day, with each of his talented receivers, Eli Rogers, Leonte Carroo, Deonte Thompson and Josh Doctson having over 60 yards and a touchdown.  The Predators on the other hand stayed in the game with a strong ground attack behind Alfred Morris, who had 123 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day but QB EJ Manuel couldn't do much in the air before being benched in the late third quarter for Garrett Gilbert.  Gilbert was able to hit Rashad Ross and Donte Moncrief for scores in the 4th but it was too little too late for the Predators, as they fell 34-30.

-- (2-3)Predators 30 - 34 Defenders(0-5)
(ORL): Gilbert - 102 yards, 2 TDs, Morris - 123 yards, 2 TDs, Moncrief - 67 yards, 1 TD
(DC): Jones - 325 yards, 4 TDs, Donnel Pumphrey - 53 yards, Josh Doctson - 72 yards, 1 TD

-- (5-0)Stallions 17 - 32 Iron(3-2)
(STL): Mallett - 166 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs, Christine Michael - 46 yards, Kevin White - 68 yards, 1 TD
(BIRM): Streveler - 138 yards, 2 TDs, Trent Richardson - 97 yards, 1 TD, Kelvin Benjamin - 43 yards, 1 TD

-- (5-0)Fleet 24 - 21 Renegades(2-3)
(SD): Johnson - 170 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, Jay Ajayi - 203 yards, 2 TDs, Martavis Bryant - 52 yards, 1 TD

“XFL Cancels Weeks 7 & 8”

March 19, 2020

Stamford, CT - Due to the Covid19 panademic sweeping the nation, the XFL has announced that they would be cancelling the games of Week 7 and Week 8.  Due to television and stadium contracts, the league will not try to reschedule those games.  The league intends to play a twelve game season starting April 3, 2020.

“XFL Cancels Regular Season”

April 1, 2020

Stamford, CT - With no end in sight, the XFL has cancelled the 2020 regular season.  However, the league does intend to play an 8 team playoff on the dates of July 11th, 18th, and 25th.  Those games will all take place inside of the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility, Ford Center at the Star, in Frisco, Texas.  The facility has a capacity of 12,000 but the league has not announced whether or not fans will be able to attend the event as of now.  With the NFL Free Agency beginning this week, Commissioner Oliver Luck also announced that XFL players could sign with NFL teams but that he hoped they would still "finish out their duties with their XFL club first through our playoffs in July."

Western Division Playoff Teams - #1 San Diego Fleet(6-0), #2 Las Vegas Outlaws(4-2), #3 San Antonio Commanders(3-3), #4 Dallas Renegades(2-4)

Eastern Division Playoff Teams - #1 St. Louis Stallions(5-1). #2 Birmingham Iron(4-2), #3 New York Guardians(3-3), #4 Houston Roughnecks(3-3)

“NFL Sign Eight XFL Stars”

April 20, 2020

Stamford, CT - The XFL lost a few of their stars to the NFL but not as many as they expected.  The league mostly lost some of their veteran stars as the NFL looked to the league for experienced depth.  With the NFL fearing the lost of off-season workouts, and training camp the league wasn't looking for more developmental bodies, but rather guys that could step in right away if needed.  The San Diego Fleet, as expected, was hit the hardest by the National Football League.

Fleet - Josh Johnson signed with the Washington Redskins, Jay Ajayi signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, Brandon Oliver signed with the Hamilton Tiger-cats and Martavis Bryant signed with the Baltimore Ravens
Stallions - Ryan Mallett signed with the Los Angeles Rams
Iron - Chris Streveler signed with the Arizona Cardinals
Outlaws - Robert Turbin signed with Jacksonville Jaguars and Courtney Upshaw signed with the Las Vegas Raiders
Predators - Alfred Morris signed with the San Francisco 49ers

It’s a concern of mine and XFL league officials. The financial report will be released at the end of 2020 cycle. They expected to handle a financial loss for year one, but perhaps the coronavirus did too much damage.

“XFL Playoffs Have Teams Showing Rust”

July 12, 2020

Frisco, TX - The first round of the XFL playoffs showed a lot of rust from the teams on the offensive side of the ball with the two month layoff.  The teams only got together for practice ten times over the last two weeks and it showed.  However, three of the four "home" favorites advanced to round two.

Re: XFL 2020

“And the Championship Game is Set!”

July 19, 2020

Frisco, TX - After the Fleet knocked off the Commanders and the Iron upset the Stallions, we have a Birmingham vs San Diego league championship game next Saturday!

-- (3-3)San Antonio Commanders 10 - 20 San Diego Fleet(6-0)
(SA): Barrett - 100 yards, 1 TD, Jeremy Hill - 52 yards, Greg Ward - 40 yards
(SD): Johnson - 184 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, Jay Ajayi - 64 yards, Martavis Bryant - 38 yards, 1 TD

The San Diego Fleet defense was just too strong for the Commanders in the Western Division Championship game.  Despite, QB Josh Johnson's two interceptions, the Commanders still just weren't able to finish drives with points.  JT Barrett finished the season strong for the Commanders, but he will have a lot of work to do with this offense if San Antonio looks to improve next season. San Diego, who was hit the hardest by the NFL during Free Agency, know this may be their best chance at a championship before next year's rebuild and they're playing like it on defense.  The Fleet will serve as the home team next Saturay and open as 6.5 point favorites.

-- (4-2)Birmingham Iron 21 - 17 St. Louis Stallions(5-1)
(BIRM): Streveler - 116 yards, 2 TDs, Trent Richardson - 56 yards, 1 TD, Kelvin Benjamin - 67 yards, 1 TD
(STL): Mallett - 226 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, Christine Michael - 67 yards, Kevin White - 74 yards

Chris Streveler does it again!  Streveler took over for Luis Perez who took over for Brandon Weeden and he hasn't lost a game yet.  Streveler didn't put up huge numbers on Saturday but he took care of the football and took advantage of the short fields provided to him from the turnovers of the Stallions.  Trent Richardson and Kelvin Benjamin also once again did what they did best all season and that was finding the endzone.  The Iron will serve as the away team for the league's championship game next week.

Re: XFL 2020

“Streveler Delivers for Birmingham!”

July 26, 2020

Frisco, TX - Future Arizona Cardinal Chris Streveler hit former Carolina Panther Kelvin Benjamin three times for Touchdowns in the 2nd quarter on Saturday putting the Iron up 21-3 going into halftime.  After an abysmal first half future and former Washington Redskin Josh Johnson rebounded in the third quarter finding a rhythm with Martavis Bryant and Malachi Jones to bring the game to 21-17 at the conclusion of the quarter.  After a three and out for the Iron and with all of the momentum, the Fleet turned to RB Jay Ajayi and he delivered big, gaining 44 yards on the drive that he finished with a touchdown and a Fleet 24-21 lead.  However, Chris Streveler was named the game's MVP for a reason and that reason was the game's final drive.  He connected with six different pass catchers en route to the 1 yard line where RB Trent Richardson jumped over the pile on 3rd and goal to give the Iron the lead and the win, 28-24.

-- (4-2)Birmingham Iron 28 - 24 San Diego Fleet(6-0)
(BIRM): Streveler - 200 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, Trent Richardson - 104 yards, 1 TD, Kelvin Benjamin - 39 yards, 3 TDs, Austin Proehl - 89 yards
(SD): Johnson - 220 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, Jay Ajayi - 90 yards, 1 TD, Martavis Bryant - 115 yards, 1 TD
