Re: AltHL - Owner Draft and Beyond

At a press conference tonight, J. H. Ark unveiled the logos for the Calgary Wranglers affiliates. He commented, "We've worked with some talented designers and believe that we can put forth logos that both our communities and our league can be proud of. We used a lot of orange. Orange seems to be popular out here. Heck, even the dirt is orange around Rapid City."

First unveiled was the AAA F-M Hjemkomst.
The Hjemkomst (with the primary geographic identifier being F-M because J. H. Ark thought it "rolled off the tongue,") call Fargo, the largest city in North Dakota, home. Their logo was designed by AltHL CEO, President, Commissioner, and Benevolent Overlord Gritty. The design features a Viking shield with a longship sailing through fields of wheat.

Secondly, the AA Rapid City Mounts logo was unveiled with great difficulty, as the velvety cloth covering the design caught on the edge of the posterboard. This led to a brief comical moment as Mr. Ark wrestled with the textile.
The Mounts hail from Rapid City in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Their shield logo was designed by the exceptional 3pointtally. The design includes a horse — a traditional Western mount — with mountains. This pays homage to Mount Rushmore, a mere half-hour from Rapid City.

Both teams heavily favor the usage of the Wranglers orange and gray as a nod to their parent team and to reinforce the prairie solidarity they share.

Mr. Ark ended his press conference by announcing a uniform design contest. "I've never been much for sweaters, except that checkerboard plaid 'I'm a reindeer!' one my sister gave me for Christmas," Ark commented. All designers are welcome to enter. The contest is set to end next Sunday, whenever it ceases to be Sunday anywhere in the world. (7 am CDT on Monday the 27th) Designs should be PMed to JamHeronArk

Re: AltHL - Owner Draft and Beyond

Those look great! That said, can you explain to me what exactly a Hjemkomst is?

The Hjemkomst is a replica longship built in Hawley, Minnesota by a Moorhead Junior High guidance counselor in 1974. After six years of construction, the ship was transported from landlocked Hawley to Lake Superior for its maiden voyage. In 1982, the Hjemkomst was sailed from Ney York City to Bergen, Norway. It now resides in a museum in Moorhead, Minnesota.

The Hjemkomst, which is Homecoming in Norwegian, was built to scale as a replica of a longship found in Norway. The homecoming name was to honor the heritage that North Dakota and Minnesota's Norwegian population share. Homecoming is also an apt homage to those who grew up on the plains, moved out to the coasts, and were welcomed back.

Oh, that's awesome! Very unique name and something I don't think you could find anywhere else!

Re: AltHL - Owner Draft and Beyond

The winning names are set. The ARCTIC CLASSIC (nominated by Wallflower) will be our traditional event in traditional venues.  The CIVIC SERIES (nominated by QCS) will be our more modern themed event.  People had mentioned that the uniforms could pay homage to the teams' city - similar to the NBA City Edition jerseys - that may be cool.  Finally the ATLAS CHAMPIONSHIP (nominated by FC Macbeth) will be at venues across the globe.

The bidding for each of the games is officially open.  Remember to refer to the original post for all of the details.  But for now here are the highlights.
1. You can only make a bid for 2 of the 3 events.
2. You are ONLY making a bid to host and the venue.  The opponent will be assigned later.
3. You are more than welcome to give a pitch to the community as to why that venue would be the perfect event.
4. While you can make multiple bids only 1 of them can win.
5. Bids will close on Wednesday.  I will then put all of the bids into polls and we will rate them.

If you have any questions as always let me know.  The conversation over the Charlotte Racers racetrack bid is a good example of the type of discussion we could be having as the bids are announced.  Please provide pictures as well to help people visualize your idea.

Re: AltHL - Owner Draft and Beyond

The Seawolves officially bid for the Arctic Classic and the Atlas Championship. The former event is proposed to be held at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, while the latter is proposed to be held at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany (Ward was former manager of the Borussia Dortmund U18 squad, and his technology business has had a significant presence in the city as its European headquarters.)

"Both stadiums are amazing facilities that have the capacity to host hockey," said Ward in his press conference. "As the home of the Seahawks, the relatively new CenturyLink Field has great sightlines, and thanks to its ability to expand to 72,000 capacity, we'll have more than enough room to get as many fans as possible in there."

As for his Atlas Championship bid, Ward cites Germany's hockey history as a good market for the event, even outside of his business obligations.

"Germany has a long history of hockey all over the nation, and I don't think that there is a better place to host an outdoor game."

Despite concerns that the stadium's standing room would hurt the bid, Ward has proposed working with the organization themselves to implement temporary safe standing, or reducing capacity if necessary.

Re: AltHL - Owner Draft and Beyond

The San Francisco Dragons are pleased to officially announce their bids for the Civic Series and the Atlas Championship.

Should the Dragons' bid for the Civic Series be accepted, it would be held at historic Hippie Hill at Golden Gate Park, best known for its integral role in the rise of hippie culture in the 1967 "Summer of Love," which influenced American and worldwide culture for years to come.  As Dragons owner Michael Burmy had to say, "With a temporary rink in place, enough room for the fans to provide a home-crowd atmosphere while still social distancing if necessary, and the Dragons wearing special tye-dye jerseys for the event, a Civic Series at Hippie Hill would be a groovy experience for all involved, full of good vibes that no one in attendance will soon forget."

In addition, the Dragons are bidding to host the Atlas Championship at the 91,000-seat Beijing National Stadium in China.  Chinese immigrants played a key role in the Bay Area's early history (and sadly, were often mistreated).  Even today, 21.4% of San Franciscans (172,181 people) are Chinese-Americans, which was a key factor in the Dragons' nickname color scheme being chosen.  Burmy continued "We are ready to appeal to one of our largest groups of fans by putting on an unforgettable show in their motherland, as well as to spread the game further in China and Beijing as it prepares to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games while making a strong statement against the tragic rise of Sinophobia which will scourge our nation well after the current pandemic is over."

Re: AltHL - Owner Draft and Beyond

Denver, CO - The Denver Bighorns, represented by owner QCS, have announced their two bids for the AltHL's famous outdoor games. For the Arctic Series, Empower Field at Mile High would play host. Colorado's history of hosting hockey and cold temperature make this an obvious bid to make.

For the Atlas Championship, QCS has suggested something unusual: Meiji Jingu Stadium, in Tokyo, Japan, home of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, would host the first-ever outdoors game in Japan.

Meiji Jingu has almost 38,000 spectators, matching seating for other popular venues for outdoor games. Japan has a history with hockey, with the national team currently ranked 23rd in the world and the women's national team ranked 6th. This is a chance for AltHL to grow the game outside traditional hockey markets, and play in a historic stadium that has played host to Babe Ruth and showcase American talent to Japan, a market largely untapped by ice hockey.
