The Royals bounced back from their loss in Long Island by trouncing the Mariners on Canada Day. The offence was consistent throughout the day, while the defence gave nothing up in the 2nd half.
Halifax played sloppy on the short week after a pair of gruelling rainy games.

The Victors’ home opener proved to be a much more difficult matchup than they expected with the Tigers. Indiana did bounce out to a strong lead in the 2nd half, but the Tigers crept back into it and took a lead in the 4th. Indiana’s offence was able to rebound and answer the bell in order for the team to pick up their 2nd win of the season.

The Wolves would continue their perfect start to the season with a win over the Falcons. Vancouver controlled the game for the first half and a bit, but Winnipeg would find a way to slip back into the game with a big 3rd quarter. However, in the end, they were not able to complete the comeback.

The Thunder would grab their first back-to-back wins since July 13, 1968, with a strong performance against the Gold Stars. Louisville’s defence was the star of the game with LB Le’Darius Wynn and 1st overall pick, LB Ricky Wildgoose causing havoc. Providence did change things up with QB Ulysses Lawyer getting the start after the offence was sputtering under QB Landon Ross. Lawyer didn’t have much luck as they were only able to get 11 points on the day.

After falling behind 24-16, QB Gene Bishop appeared to get fired up on the sideline with coaches getting in his face. Whatever was said appeared to wake up the veteran QB as he would throw a pair of TDs to WR Taylor Karis to come back and win the game. Edmonton did their best to bounce back, but the loud stadium and a timely interception from S Garet deVale would thwart any comeback attempt.

RB Tyler Kuhn took back the opening kick and the Serpents didn’t look back as they molly-whopped the Wheat Kings. Minnesota would be up by 28 heading into the final quarter, so they would give QB Leonidas Dumont a chance to close out the game, which got a standing ovation as Dumont was a big reason the Serpents had a great first season and he had bounced back from another bad injury. Also, Minnesota would have 3 different running backs score in this one with Richard Morin grabbing a late score.

As the week came to a close, the later Sunday games would turn out to be great. A big defensive play from LB Junior Abbott to punch the ball out in the 3rd turned into a touchdown when S Jarell Parker picked up the loose ball and scrambled into the endzone.  Long Island was able to bounce back and tie the game late, but Calgary was playing the best they had this season and would get into field goal range for K Billy Eichelberger to give them their first win of the season.

The Blue Wings’ faithful did their best to take over Anderson Stadium and give Buffalo a bit of a home-field feel. However, Toronto came to play, taking a 14-24 lead in the 3rd. Buffalo managed to tie the game, but on 2nd and 1, RB Max Tracy would slip through a hole and take the back 68 yards to the house to steal a big win.

Great to hear about Louisville. Is it to early to nickname the Louisville defense the Thundering Herd? Although Horde also sounds nice and sounds like a great defensive squad. The Horde, you know?

Montreal jumped out to a huge 21-3 lead in the first half of their game against the defending champs. QB Gene Bishop took advantage of a Buffalo secondary that would lose S Mathieu Cazenave early forcing DB Santino Arriola to step into the safety spot. To make matters worse, RB Jimmy Golden struggled to hold onto the ball for the second straight week, fumbling twice in the first half. RB Jasper Dickerson took over in the second half and helped Buffalo to come back but Montreal held on for the big win.

Pittsburgh bounced back from another loss with a strong win over London. The Blacksmiths dominated this game throughout making the Tigers’ day rough. QB Magnus Torrensen struggled for the Tigers with a pair of interceptions, leading QB Emmitt Jackson to get some snaps which turned into a solid drive late in the game.

Regina looked like they could steal the game with an early pick-6 from Madison McGee, but the Thunder were able to answer back with a pair of touchdowns to win their 3rd straight.

Calgary’s health would take another hit with starting QB Jesse Essex injuring his knee and DL Roger Barrett leaving the game as the team’s 3rd injury on the D-line. QB Jerome Sheppard stepped in, but the Tigers were too far back to make anything happen.

The pressure was starting to mount for the Gold Stars’ offence, who had only gotten, at most, 11 points in a game this season, and they delivered with a strong showing against the Rangers. QB Landon Ross was back under centre after being benched last week, and he threw a pair of touchdowns in the win. Their first win of the season did not come easy as Edmonton rallied late to get a field goal try on the game's last play. However, K Thomas Standberry’s kick would miss wide ending the game on a single.

A heavy thunderstorm rolled through Minneapolis on Sunday, delaying the game between the Serpents and Mariners. The rain remained once the game finally started, making this Halifax’s 3rd rainy game in 4 weeks. It was a sloppy game with the score being 1-3 before a second weather delay occurred. It continued as a sloppy game with many turnovers, but the only one to get a major was Minnesota’s DB Davey Woods who took in a fumble caused by LB Orion Carter. The Serpents would hold on in the rain for their 3rd win of the season.

Boston and Long Island had an epic duel to close out week 4. The teams battled back and forth, literally, with only the Raiders scoring back-to-back times. An injury to RB Dareion Fields would help open up the Raiders’ offence which went more pass-heavy for the first time in probably a decade. The change helped the team sneak out a win over the Independents to maintain sole possession of first in the East.

Buffalo was able to get back on track with a strong win in their first of 3 straight games against teams named the Tigers. Lemieux was especially sharp with 2 passing touchdowns. QB Jerome Sheppard made his first start for Calgary and was still able to get the ball moving with the still-strong rushing attack, but they just couldn’t keep up with Buffalo.

In the end, Boston’s offence was able to kill the clock and extend their lead to seal it.

The Raiders still fought back with a 4th quarter TD, but they would still suffer their second loss in a game many thought they should win.

QB Rusty Lamb would hit WR Adrian Hill on a last-play hail mary to secure the win. To make the loss worse for Edmonton, QB Blair Collins would leave the game with an injury following a monster hit from DL Andrew Morris, which led to a DL Cole Brentwood touchdown. QB Ken Myers replaced Collins and still got the team on the board with field goals, although more because of the run game.

Vancouver easily rolled on to 5-0 with a win over the Tigers. QB Kevin Westwood continued to look sharp with 2 more passing touchdowns, while the defence ate up London with DL Rashawn Sutherland grabbing a sack and a forced fumble. London’s offence continued to struggle under QB Magnus Torrensen, leading to a second consecutive game where QB Emmitt Jackson entered the game in the 4th quarter. Many are expecting Jackson to get the start next weekend as London heads down to Buffalo.

A very important game was on for Saturday Night as the Blacksmiths would get the season sweep of the Victors in another tight game. Pittsburgh felt in control of the game from the opening drive, but Indiana certainly pushed back in the 4th with the clutch touchdown from WR Ed Edwards. However, with Indy missing the 2-point attempt, Pittsburgh felt more motivated to get the ball in the endzone to secure the win and would with Raymond Green burying his former team.

Halifax rolled into Week 5 having only scored 43 points all season. However, something clicked in the offence and they rattled off 37 points to grab their 2nd win of the season. QB Lyle Painter rose to the challenge of kickstarting the offence throwing 5 touchdowns. Montreal had a strong start to this game, getting out to a 17-7 lead, but their defence just could not rebound once Painter and the Mariners got rolling.

The Raiders and Mariners went down to the wire in the first half of the Friday night doubleheader. Halifax was able to jump out to a 17-10 lead, however, it came at a cost with WR Jav Kerrigan suffering an injury on the drive. The Raiders, on the other hand, were struggling without RB Scott Norton, who left in the first half, however, they still had RB Dareion Fields who would give them a chance to win the game. K Henderson Schumacher would have the final say in the game with 10 seconds left.

The first NAAF Battle of Alberta would be a battle of backup QBs instead with Calgary starting QB Jerome Sheppard and Edmonton starting QB Ken Myers. Myers, of course, made his first career start in professional football. It turned out to be a big showing for Myers, who was quiet all game but ended up leading Edmonton on a comeback win with a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns to secure their 3rd win of the season.

While this is their first-ever meeting, the Wolves and Serpents might have a solid rivalry forming as the two teams battled for the top of the West Division. Minnesota played well in the first half rain, taking a 10-7 lead, but Vancouver bounced back in the 3rd with 10 points of their own. The final quarter would be a test for both teams as the rain picked up, but the Serpents’ run-game was built better and thrived in the ugly weather, allowing the team to counter with 10 more points and earning their 4th straight win and handing Vancouver their first loss in the NAAF.

The Independents returned home to end the Gold Stars' 2-game win streak on Saturday Night. The defence was able to stifle the Gold Stars’ attack, especially after RB Ronnie Byers left the game with an injury. Providence did manage to hang with Boston until the 4th when a long Boston drive killed the clock and extended the gap to 9 points.

Ottawa seemed vengeful in their first meeting with Montreal this season, as they were able to capture their first win since Canada Day. After a poor performance last weekend, QB Drake Young bounced back with a 3 touchdown performance, which could have been more if not for a S Garet deVale interception on the goalline. Luckily for Young, DL Bernhard Hartmann would grab a safety on the next play in his first game back from injury.

The Battle of Prairies turned out to be quite a fireworks show as Regina pulled off their second consecutive win. QB Rusty Lamb played well until he was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter. QB Lefty Lapointe entered the game and faired well, although mostly RB Deion Chapman did the work. QB Emerson Thompson in particular struggled for Winnipeg, throwing 4 interceptions in the loss, which might mean the Falcons could look at changing it up after the bye week.

Buffalo took it to the Tigers with a 41-10 stomping. QB Charles Lemieux continued to put on a show with a 3 touchdown performance. QB Emmitt Jackson made his first start of the season where he did find the endzone with his feet, but his day was cut short by a minor injury resulting in QB Magnus Torrensen returning to action and then getting rolled over by the Blue Wings’ defence in the second half.
