Disappointing loss for Boston, but good to see the Victors actually living up to their name for once. This is definitely shaping up to be an exciting season.

The Raiders returned to Hartford for the first time since 1953 with a strong win against The Athletics.
QB Lyle Painter and WR Darryl Duke were the stars of the second quarter scoring a pair of touchdowns.
The defence was still so-so with the Athletics managing to put up 24 points and a relatively strong second half for the winless squad.
DL Vernon Spears still made his mark with a forced fumble and LB Deon Wiggins joined him with one of his own.
DL Pat Butler had his first career forced fumble for The Athletics.

Louisville Thunder - 37, Indiana Victors - 18 - Thunder Stadium - July 28, 1962 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q

37-18 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark

The Thunder continued their hot streak with a big win over the Victors on rivalry week.
RB Rodney Clark had a big game with 3 touchdowns and 120 rushing yards.
The Thunder defence was suffocating outside of a couple of second-half drives from the Victors.
DB Oliver Langstrom and S Johnny Berger had a pick each and DL Tyrone Affalo, LB Scotty Williams, and LB Silas O’Brien had a forced fumble each.
QB Stanley Troyer struggled in his return, but it's tough to really say when you are playing one of the best defences in the league.

Providence Gold Stars - 31, Boston Independents - 17 - New Providence Stadium - July 28, 1962 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
0-7 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan

24-14 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Benedict Spencer
4th Q
24-17 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
31-17 PRO - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire

The Gold Stars completed the sweep of the Independents for the first time since 1958 (overall 4th time in the NAAF’s history).
QB Connor O’Rourke had another strong performance with a 2 touchdown game while RB Marcus Devonshire picked up a pair of TDs of his own.
Both teams would lose their top WR in the game, but the Gold Stars took advantage of the situation with rookie WR Owen Paisley having a strong performance coming in and secondary made it tough on the Boston WRs.
S Shawn Jensen had a pick in the game for the Gold Stars.
Boston drops their second straight game with the offence being shut down in the second half.

Montreal Rouge - 14, Ottawa Royals - 21 - Mount Royal Stadium - July 29, 1962 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q

7-14 OTT - 2PT QB Jean Matieau -> TE Jervonte Howell
4th Q
7-21 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
14-21 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis

The Rouge continued to struggle, losing their 3rd straight game falling further back from the rest of the East Division.
The first half was relatively close with both defences doing a good job of keeping the offence down.
DL Dexter Barbarcos had a forced fumble for the Rouge while LB Douglas MacDougall had one for the Royals.
The Royals took off behind QB Jean Matieau in the second half leading to the Royals taking a late 14 point lead.
QB Gene Bishop tried to get the team back into it with a late score, but it was not enough.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 17, London Tigers - 27 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - July 29, 1962 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

4th Q

17-24 LDN - QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Russell Wilcox
17-27 LDN - FG K Nimrod Hansworth

The Tigers kept rolling with their 4th straight win fending off a Buffalo comeback.
RB Clifford Russell continued his strong start with another pair of TDs.
The Lemieux-Pembroke duo put up another pair of TDs that got the team back into the game.
The duel between Kiernan and Lemieux is already looking like it could be one of the best battles over the next few years.

1962 Week 7

Long Island Raiders - 7, Louisville Thunder - 17 - Long Island Stadium - August 2, 1962 - 7 PM ET - TNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
2nd Q
0-7 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Piers Key
3rd Q
0-10 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
0-17 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark
4th Q
7-17 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields

The Thunder rolled to another win taking down the still struggling Raiders.
The defence did their part by shutting down the Raiders' offence on almost every chance with Dareion Fields getting the lone late touchdown.
The Raiders' defence wasn’t too bad either, having one of their better games of the season, but the offence was non-existent which continues to raise the concern for the team that has now slipped to 2-5.
LB Scotty Williams and S Johnny Berger had turnovers for the Thunder while LB Gene Benson and DL Vernon Spears had turnovers for the Raiders.

Ottawa Royals - 16, Providence Gold Stars - 24 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - August 3, 1962 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
3-0 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
3-7 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Sammy Moss
2nd Q
10-7 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
3rd Q

4th Q
16-14 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
16-21 PRO - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
16-24 PRO - FG K Ira Foster

Providence continued to ride their win streak, winning their 3rd in a row over the division-leading Royals.
QB Connor O’Rourke had another two-touchdown game to pass QB Jean Matieau at the top of the league.
Ottawa has looked a little troublesome over the last couple of weeks against solid teams which could spell trouble for the team down the stretch.
DB Neville Falkner was able to add to his interception total as well.

Indiana Victors - 19, The Athletics - 9 - Victory Stadium - August 4, 1962 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
3-0 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3-3 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
2nd Q
10-3 IND - RTD RB Cody Barnes
3rd Q

13-6 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
16-6 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
4th Q
19-6 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
19-9 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin

The Victors and Athletics game was impressively dull, as both teams really could not move the ball well.
Mistakes and incompletions were common on both teams leading to a lot of punts and a lot of field goals.
The Victors got a couple of turnovers on defence with DL William Sanderson and LB Harrison Bennett getting fumbles.

Boston Independents - 27, Montreal Rouge - 26 - Richardson Stadium - August 4, 1962 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-7 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
0-14 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Derek Cross
2nd Q

4th Q
13-26 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
20-26 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Paul Franklin
27-26 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> TE Tanner Tint

Montreal finally showed that they had a chance in this one, however, they collapsed in the final quarter with QB Nathaniel Braddock making a stellar comeback.
The Independents were slow out of the gate, but Braddock took charge in the second half leading the team on the comeback to keep up with Providence and Ottawa.
Montreal’s defence had some strong play with DB Quentin Xavier grabbing a pick, and Boston had some success with LB Brent Harper and DL Robin Hill getting fumbles.

London Tigers - 23, Buffalo Blue Wings - 13 - Western Fair Stadium - August 5, 1962 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-3 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
2nd Q

16-6 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
4th Q
16-13 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
23-13 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Jack Duncan

The Tigers continued to roll onto their 5th straight win taking down the Blue Wings for the second straight game.
Kiernan had his best game of the season with a pair of touchdowns in the win.
Buffalo’s offence struggled against the tough Tigers’ D-line, with QB Charles Lemieux getting sacked 4 times.
DL Olympus Heights had a fumble and DB Jackson Miles took in a pick for the Tigers.

1962 Week 8

Providence Gold Stars - 15, Buffalo Blue Wings - 24 - New Providence Stadium - August 10, 1962 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Benedict Spencer
8-0 PRO - Single K Ira Foster
2nd Q
8-6 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
3rd Q
8-13 BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Zachariah Pembroke
8-14 BUF - Single K Ryan Perch
15-14 PRO - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
4th Q
15-17 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
15-24 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden

The Buffalo Blue Wings took advantage of an injury to Providence’s young star in DB Neville Falkner.
They were able to get the offence going and made a strong comeback to win their 3rd game of the season.
Providence certainly didn’t go down without a fight, but a late S Frazier Brooks interception led to RB Jimmy Golden putting the game out of reach.

Montreal Rouge - 17, Boston Independents - 10 - Mount Royal Stadium - August 11, 1962 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-3 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
7-3 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
2nd Q
7-10 BOS - RTD RB Eddie Thompson
3rd Q
10-10 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
4th Q
17-10 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> TE Eli Grant

Well, it was the worst-case scenario for the Boston Independents, who not only lost an important game to the Montreal Rouge but also lost their star QB Nathaniel Braddock for what is likely the rest of the season after taking a big hit from DL Dexter Barbarcos.
Montreal finally got over the hurdle with a win off of a TE Eli Grant touchdown.
Montreal’s defence took advantage of Boston’s backup QB Randy Sellers and caused him a lot of trouble, DL Hubert Tessier had 2 sacks on the day.

London Tigers - 35, Long Island Raiders - 18 - Western Fair Stadium - August 11, 1962 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Jack Duncan
7-3 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
2nd Q
14-3 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
14-6 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
3rd Q
14-12 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
21-12 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
28-12 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
4th Q
28-15 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
35-15 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Russell Wilcox
35-18 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher

The Raiders made a change at QB for their game against the Tigers with Oscar Rigano stepping in for QB Lyle Painter.
Rigano has been in the league since 1956, but has had very little action in his career, in his first start, he was alright but the Tigers were too much.
The Tigers suffered major injuries with LB Dallas Dillard and LB Wilson Rockwood-Barnes would be left with 3-week injuries.
Kiernan and Russell would lead the way for the Tigers as they still put up 35 in the win.
Both of these teams seem to be highly likely to make moves ahead of the upcoming trade deadline.

Louisville Thunder - 43, The Athletics - 10 - Thunder Stadium - August 12, 1962 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
3-0 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
10-0 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Piers Key
2nd Q
17-0 LOU - DTD INT DB Oliver Langstrom
23-0 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark
26-0 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
3rd Q
33-0 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Clyde McIntosh
33-3 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
36-3 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
4th Q
36-10 ATH - RTD RB Stavros Black
43-10 LOU - DTD INT S Johnny Berger

The Thunder did what they were expected to do against the winless Athletics and put up 43 in the win.
DB Oliver Langstrom and S Johnny Berger both took back a pick for a touchdown.
They keep ahead of the Tigers with the win and are looking for down to the final 4 games with their destiny in their hands.

Ottawa Royals - 30, Indiana Victors - 20 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - August 12, 1962 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q

4th Q
23-13 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
23-20 IND - PTD QB Stanley Troyer -> WR Alexei Dubois
30-20 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones

The Royals retook the top spot in the East Division with a win over the Indiana Victors.
It was a close battle, but the Royals were able to stay one step ahead of the Victors to hold onto the Victory.
DL Olaf Viktorsson was strong for the battered defence with a forced fumble and a sack.

TRADE DEADLINE UPCOMING
The trade deadline will be Tuesday at 6 PM ET, and there could be a lot of action coming. The major injuries this week will certainly spark both the Tigers and Independents to look at options to help. The Tigers are rumoured to be looking into several LB options with 3 of their 5 LBs injured. Boston may also be looking at QB options with Braddock going down for the next 6 weeks. As usual, Montreal will likely be trying to make something happen with GM Virgil Gross in control. They're hoping to inject some life into the team heading into the final few weeks. Providence could be active in the market as well as the team is still looking to go all in this season. The sellers are likely going to be the Athletics, however, Indiana and Buffalo might be looking to part ways with some of their older players. Ultimately, Long Island will be the team to watch. There has been plenty of rumours that GM Wayne Tillman has had enough with the current core and even QB Lyle Painter who could very well be available along with DB Jared Francis and LB Elijah Goldwater. The deadline could dramatically shift things if a lot of trades happen.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Great win by the Rouge, it does suck for Boston to lose Braddock for the rest of the season though. Buffalo also did a great job with a big win over Providence
