Damn Montreal, a comeback only to lose, that hurts. Indiana has to do something, cause they're really bad.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1960 Week 9

Montreal’s offence could not move the ball in the second half and had 3 turnovers with 2 picks and one fumble.
DB Joe Robinson and LB Scotty Williams each had a pick and DL Vinny Brown had the forced fumble.
QB Gene Bishop continued his strong play and managed to get the offence to the endzone 4 times.

Indiana Victors - 27, London Tigers - 25 - Victory Stadium - August 20, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Rain
1st Q
3-0 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

4th Q
24-19 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
24-25 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
27-25 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

The Victors finally snapped their winless season with a shocking win over the West Division Leading Tigers.
The win came with some help from several Tigers’ mistakes and the rain.
In the opening quarter, RB Eric Sydney dropped the ball on a kick return which S David Jones picked up for a touchdown.
WR Ed Edwards showed off his ability to make people miss with a huge kick return touchdown in the 3rd quarter.
The Tigers were still able to play strong throughout the game and come back, but another fumble late in the game set up Indiana for a huge field goal to win it.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 20, Providence Gold Stars - 17 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - August 20, 1960 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Cloudy

Buffalo captured their 2nd win of the season with Randy Sellers leading them on a game-winning drive late in the 4th.
Providence’s offence struggled in the first half with Buffalo’s DL Lonnie Vincent bringing the pressure to Connor O’Rourke.
S Frazier Brooks had another pick for the Blue Wings, as did DB Jared Francis.

17-13 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Clyde McIntosh
4th Q
17-16 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
24-16 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm

The Independents’ defence found a way to stop the Royals' offence in a tough win to pull themselves into the hunt for the division title.
QB Nathaniel Braddock was the leader in the effort on offence throwing 3 touchdowns in the win.
LB Brent Harper came up with a forced fumble and DB Carson Scott managed to reel in a pick off of the great Jean Matieau.
Ottawa dropped their 3rd of the season which is the most since the ‘57 season where they went 7-3-2.

Louisville Thunder - 18, Long Island Raiders - 28 - Thunder Stadium - August 22, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q

16-21 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Marty Jay
18-21 LOU - 2PT RB Stavros Black
18-28 LI - DTD INT DB Clinton Gates

Louisville’s comeback effort was foiled after DB Clinton Gates picked off QB Leonidas Dumont late in the fourth to secure the Raiders’ win.
RB Johnnie Stafford continued to get comfortable in the Raiders’ offence scoring a pair of touchdowns.
Dumont was solid in his return throwing two touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Thunder slip out of a playoff spot for the time being.

Never thought I would see Worcester at the top of the East Division at any point this season. They are definitely the real deal this season.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1960 Week 10

London Tigers - 51, Indiana Victors - 0 - Western Fair Stadium - August 26, 1960 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Windy
1st Q
7-0 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
14-0 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
2nd Q
17-0 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
24-0 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Benedict Spencer
3rd Q
31-0 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
38-0 LDN - DTD INT DB Jackson Miles
41-0 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
4th Q
48-0 LDN - PTD QB Christian Stewart -> WR Wilbert Benjamin
51-0 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth

The Tigers rebounded quite nicely putting up an NAAF record 51 points in a stomping of the Victors.
The team even sat QB Riley Kiernan and several starters after going up 38-0 in the 3rd quarter.
QB Christian Stewart saw some action grabbing a passing touchdown of his own on the day to longtime Tiger, WR Wilbert Benjamin.
The Victors had nothing on their end, QB Stanley Troyer would leave the game and would be replaced by QB Andrew Sexton who could not get past the vengeful Tigers’ defence.
DB Jackson Miles had a great day with 2 interceptions and a defensive touchdown.

Montreal Rouge - 30, Louisville Thunder - 21 - Mount Royal Stadium - August 27, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
10-0 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
2nd Q
10-7 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
16-7 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
3rd Q
16-14 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Ben Roland
23-14 MTL - DTD INT DB Quentin Xavier
4th Q
23-21 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
30-21 MTL - PTD QB Stanislav Ovechkin -> WR Derek Cross

The Rouge were able to snap their two-game slide with a strong win over the Thunder.
QB Stanislav Ovechkin threw a touchdown, while Mallard-White scored two touchdowns.
DB Quentin Xavier had a big pick-6 and DL Zakary Turbide brought in a fumble.
The Thunder were not able to get the ball moving or stop the Rouge on the ground.
The continued struggles may cost the team a playoff spot as the season is coming closer to a close.

Long Island Raiders - 35, Ottawa Royals - 27 - Long Island Stadium - August 27, 1960 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 LI - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford

14-17 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
3rd Q
21-17 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Robert Lang
21-20 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
4th Q
28-20 LI - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
35-20 LI - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
35-27 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Chester Bennett

The Raiders continued their strong streak with a strong offensive performance.
RB Johnnie Stafford had a big game with 3 touchdowns, while Painter tossed the other two.
Ottawa was able to keep up until Long Island’s monster 4th quarter where they feel too far behind to keep up.
The Raiders' defence gave Matieau some trouble with pressure on almost every play as the Royals lose 4 games in a season for the first time since 1954.

Boston Independents - 27, Buffalo Blue Wings - 13 - Richardson Stadium - August 28, 1960 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
3-0 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
10-0 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
2nd Q
10-1 BUF - Single K Donald Brewer
17-1 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm
3rd Q
20-1 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
20-4 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
20-10 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
4th Q
20-13 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
27-13 BOS - RTD RB Eddie Thompson

Boston continued to roll with another win over the Blue Wings to officially knock the Buffalo squad from playoff contention.
LB Konrad Aust and LB Brent Harper were solid in the first half combining for 11 tackles between the two and an interception and a forced fumble respectively.
QB Randy Sellers started his 4th game but started to show some weaknesses throwing 2 interceptions in the first half.

Providence Gold Stars - 10, Worcester Athletics - 31 - New Providence Stadium - August 28, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 PRO - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire

3rd Q
10-17 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
10-24 WOR - RTD RB Lawrence Sharp
4th Q
10-31 WOR - RTD RB Leo Ravelli

The Athletics ran off to their 7th win of the season becoming the first team in the league to clinch a playoff spot, which is their first since 1957.
Providence started hot, but continued mistakes cost them throughout the game and ended with the team only getting 3 more points.
Worcester’s defence played a part in the win with S Shawn Jensen bringing in a pick and LB Scotty Williams grabbing a fumble.
QB Connor O’Rourke was visibly frustrated on the sideline with the team’s play finally letting it show after the team fell to a terrible 1-9.

Jesus, London was not messing around this week. At least both the Victors and Gold Stars have a win so far, it's looking like a bad year for my teams.

1960 Week 11

Long Island Raiders - 27, Buffalo Blue Wings - 17 - Long Island Stadium - September 3, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Darryl Duke
2nd Q

20-10 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
4th Q
27-10 LI - PTD RB Johnnie Stafford
27-17 BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Daniel Irons

The Raiders locked up their ticket to the playoffs with a strong win over the Buffalo Blue Wings.
Johnnie Stafford had a pair of touchdowns against his old team continuing to make his case for an offensive player of the year.
Buffalo started rookie QB Charles Lemieux for the first time; he was solid throwing his first career touchdown in the final quarter.
The Raiders’ defence was quite strong coming up with a pair of turnovers from LB Rusty McVee and DB Slay Mitchell.

Ottawa Royals - 34, Montreal Rouge - 24 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - September 3, 1960 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Chester Bennett
7-7 MTL - PTD QB Stanislav Ovechkin -> WR Ray Lopez
14-7 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
2nd Q

28-21 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Chester Bennett
4th Q
28-24 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
34-24 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> TE Jervonte Howell

With their backs against the wall, the Royals pulled out a huge win over the Montreal Rouge behind QB Jean Matieau’s 4 touchdown performance.
Ottawa’s defence came up big near the end of the game with DB Uzzia Hayes grabbing a pick to give Ottawa a chance to extend their lead.
Montreal on the other hand continued to slip dropping their 3rd in the last 4 games as the playoffs draw near.
QB Stanislav Ovechkin was solid himself throwing a pair of TDs but was not able to keep pace with the great Matieau.

Providence Gold Stars - 22, London Tigers - 25 - New Providence Stadium - September 4, 1960 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
3-0 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
6-0 PRO - FG K Ira Foster

6-14 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
3rd Q

22-23 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
22-25 LDN - 2PT QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Wilbert Benjamin

The Tigers pulled ahead late in their battle with the Gold Stars officially booking their ticket to the playoffs.
Riley Kiernan and the offence came down a bit from their dominant performance last week, but it was still strong with a late comeback push.
Providence was better in this match than their ugly loss to Worcester last week with O’Rourke throwing a pair of touchdowns.
As for defence, DL Craig White grabbed a fumble for Providence, and DB Ricardo Salvador had a pick for the Tigers.

Worcester Athletics - 14, Boston Independents - 19 - Worcester Stadium - September 5, 1960 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
0-3 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
7-3 WOR - RTD RB Bernard Alston
2nd Q

3rd Q
7-13 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
4th Q
14-13 WOR - RTD RB Lawrence Sharp
14-19 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm

Boston grabbed a huge win over the Worcester Athletics to take control of the East Division and lock their spot up in the playoffs.
The team even went aggressive late in the game looking to capture the tiebreaker over the Athletics.
Since Worcester had beat them by 2 in Week 2, they needed to beat them by more in order to win the series, that is why the team went for the touchdown over the field goal in the final quarter.
Boston’s defence was solid as well with DL Robin Hill grabbing a forced fumble and LB Brent Harper leading the way with 10 tackles.
Worcester’s offence still played alright but had many 2 and outs throughout the game.

Indiana Victors - 7, Louisville Thunder - 26 - Victory Stadium - September 5, 1960 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy

The Thunder kept their playoffs hopes alive with a strong win over the Victors.
RB Stavros Black led the way with a pair of touchdowns and 89 Rushing Yards.
The defence also played a huge part in keeping the Victors off the board for another two quarters following their 51-0 thumping against the Tigers.
DB Alexander Bradley and S Johnny Berger grabbed interceptions while DL Theo Conte had a forced fumble.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1960 Week 12

Buffalo Blue Wings - 17, Indiana Victors - 19 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - September 10, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-3 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
7-3 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
2nd Q
7-6 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
7-9 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3rd Q
7-16 IND - PTD QB Caldwell Higgins III -> WR Angus Stevenson
10-16 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
4th Q
10-19 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
17-19 BUF - RTD QB Angelo Medina

The Blue Wings send-off for QB Angelo Medina did not go as planned with the team falling short on a comeback against the lowly Victors.
Indiana cycled through their players which were looking to fight for jobs for next season which resulted in the team getting their second win of the season.
QB Caldwell Higgins III was the best of the 3 QBs throwing a touchdown and no interceptions.
S Frazier Brooks still had an interception for Buffalo, but there wasn’t much on defence.
QB Angelo Medina likely ended his career with a huge touchdown run to give Buffalo a fighting chance, but that was all he could manage.

Ottawa Royals - 28, Worcester Athletics - 18 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - September 10, 1960 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
7-3 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin

21-15 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
4th Q
21-18 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
28-18 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov

The Ottawa Royals managed to pull off the late playoff push with back-to-back wins to close out the season.
Matieau threw for another pair of TDs while RB Alexei Volkov punched in a pair of touchdowns as well.
Worcester was unable to finish their drives throughout the game and ended up kicking a lot of field goals.
QB Gene Bishop also had a couple of mistakes with a pair of interceptions thrown to DB Mingan Oliver and DB Petr Westerberg.

Louisville Thunder - 23, Providence Gold Stars - 13 - Thunder Stadium - September 11, 1960 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
3-0 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost

4th Q
16-10 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
16-13 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
23-13 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Ben Roland

The Thunder were able to put themselves in a position to potentially sneak into the playoffs with a win over the Gold Stars.
Alexander Bradley had a big pick-6 in the first that gave the team momentum which helped them to the end of the game.
To make Providence’s horrible season worse, QB Connor O’Rourke was injured on the pick-6 play taking a big hit as he threw.
QB Rigobert St-Hilaire was fine and was able to run the ball on the group, but his lack of experience in the Gold Stars offence cost them a bit.
However, the good news for Providence is that they will have the 1st overall pick in the draft.

Montreal Rouge - 34, Boston Independents - 31 - Mount Royal Stadium - September 11, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

34-31 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger

The Rouge played one of their best games in order to clinch their first playoff spot since 1954.
The win also knocked the Thunder out of the playoffs.
RB Scott Mallard-White came through with a strong performance taking in three touchdowns and rushing for 187 yards.
Boston was right there with them behind the arm of QB Nathaniel Braddock who found all 3 of his starting WRs first touchdowns.
DB Clayton Malone had the lone turnover in the game with a pick on his former team.
Mount Royal Stadium was going nuts as Kettinger kicked the game-winning field goal, there were a few people that got onto the field after the game, but was cleared up fairly quickly.
Despite the loss, the Independents were still able to secure their first division title since 1954 with the Athletics loss to the Royals.

London Tigers - 17, Long Island Raiders - 23 - Western Fair Stadium - September 11, 1960 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
0-7 LI - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
7-7 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Benedict Spencer
2nd Q
7-10 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
3rd Q
7-17 LI - RTD Johnnie Stafford

10-20 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
4th Q
17-20 LDN - PTD QB Christian Stewart -> WR Max Sutton
17-23 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher

The Long Island Raiders were able to win their third straight West Division title with a huge 17-23 win on the road.
Unfortunately, the battle came out with major casualties for both sides.
QB Riley Kiernan was the first, leaving the game near the start of the 2nd, and was replaced by QB Christian Stewart.
Not long into the second quarter, the Raiders would also lose their starting QB with Lyle Painter leaving the game with a more severe injury than Kiernan.
QB Brian Meadows took over for the Raiders and helped get them into range for Johnnie Stafford to punch it in.
Stewart did his best, but the Raiders' defence turned up the pressure and came after him and he was unable to get the Tigers back to the endzone after Max Sutton had scored.
Both teams will be without their starting QBs heading into their playoff games, and likely only Kiernan would be able to return for the McCallister Cup at the earliest.

Final Standings

1960 Division Semi-Finals Preview

Montreal Rouge VS. Ottawa Royals - Mount Royal Stadium - September 17, 1960 - 3 PM ET - Forecast: Partly Cloudy
Head-to-Head: W6 - MTL 31-17 OTT, W11 OTT 34-24 MTL
A classic rivalry will be the kickoff to the 1960 NAAF playoffs. The two teams met in the playoffs back in 1953 which was the last time the Royals were not in the McCallister Cup. During this season, it was a strong start for both of these teams, however, both teams fell off in the second half landing them both facing the potential of missing the playoffs heading into week 12. Montreal’s offence has been solid, but inconsistent as a whole, but after a strong win in week 12, there seems to be momentum behind the QB Stanislav Ovechkin led crew. Their defence has made improvements, but there is no way they outplay the Royals' offence. Ottawa does have the advantage of experience as they have had for many years now, but back to back wins gives them momentum going in as well. In the end, Montreal will have a huge advantage with their crowd, but it is tough to bet against Matieau and the Royals.
My Pick: Royals

London Tigers VS. Worcester Athletics - Western Fair Stadium - September 17, 1960 - 7 PM ET - Forecast: Clear
Head-to-Head: LDN 45-17 WOR
While the lone battle between the Tigers and Athletics was ugly, it is unlikely the same will happen here with the Tigers rolling in with QB Christian Stewart instead of QB Riley Kiernan. It is still important to note that Stewart is a solid QB and one of the best backups in the league, so he certainly won’t hurt London. Worcester seems to be a complete wildcard, as they have been all season, but there are a lot of questions about if they can take on the best of the best being 2-4-1 against playoff teams this season. London will look to control the game and make things easy on Stewart while Worcester is likely to be aggressive and make the most of every opportunity they can. The Tigers still look like the top dogs here, and I can’t pick against them.
My Pick: Tigers
