Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1960 Week 3

Indiana Victors - 18, Montreal Rouge - 35 - Victory Stadium - July 8, 1960 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Light Rain
1st Q
0-7 MTL - PTD QB Stanislav Ovechkin -> WR Derek Cross
0-14 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
2nd Q3-14 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3-21 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
3rd Q

10-28 IND - PTD QB Stanley Troyer -> WR Angus Stevenson
4th Q
10-35 MTL - PTD QB Lee Rogers -> WR Derek Cross
16-35 IND - PTD QB Stanley Troyer -> WR Alexei Dubois
18-35 IND - 2PT QB Stanley Troyer -> WR Ed Edwards

Montreal continued their hot start with a huge 5 touchdown performance, QB Stanislav Ovechkin had 2 touchdowns before QB Lee Rogers made his return in the 4th and threw a bomb to put the Rouge up 35-10.
Indiana struggled once RB Rodney Clark left the game with a minor injury, but they found some strength in the pass-game with Stanley Troyer getting into a groove.
Montreal had a strong defence in the first half with DB Quentin Xavier grabbing a pick as well as S Garet deVale grabbing one for himself.

Worcester Athletics - 23, Ottawa Royals - 23 - Worcester Stadium - July 9, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Heavy Rain
1st Q
3-0 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
10-0 WOR - DTD FUM LB Harrison Bennett
10-3 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
2nd Q
17-3 WOR - RTD RB Lawrence Sharp
17-6 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
3rd Q
23-6 WOR - RTD RB Bernard Alston
23-13 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
4th Q
23-20 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
23-23 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette

A difficult game in the rain ended with Ottawa tying the game on the last play after falling behind 23-6 in the second half.
Turnovers were the issue for the Royals who had 4 on the day, DL Vinny Brown, LB Scotty Williams, and LB Harrison Bennett each had a fumble and S Shawn Jensen had an interception.
Ottawa had their own fair share of turnovers, but with DL Olaf Viktorsson still out, the team struggled to stop the run.
QB Jean Matieau was able to lead the Royals to get back in the game and get into field goal range with only 38 seconds left.

Providence Gold Stars - 10, Boston Independents - 20 - New Providence Stadium - July 9, 1960 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Heavy Rain
1st Q
0-7 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
2nd Q
0-14 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan

3rd Q
10-14 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
10-17 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
4th Q
10-20 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg

The rain on the East coast let up in the first half, which allowed the teams to put together some drives, but in the second half, the rain picked up and the offences struggled.
Boston came through with their first win on the back of Kendall Morgan having a strong day.
Providence had some success with RB Marcus Devonshire out of the backfield, but QB Connor O’Rourke struggled.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 20, Long Island Raiders - 20 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - July 10, 1960 - Weather: Windy
1st Q
3-0 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
10-0 BUF - DTD INT S Frazier Brooks
2nd Q
10-3 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
10-10 LI - RTD RB Conner Riley
3rd Q
13-10 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
13-17 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Darryl Duke
4th Q
19-17 BUF - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
19-20 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
20-20 BUF - Single K Donald Brewer

It was an odd finish to the Buffalo-Long Island game, as the Blue Wings would manage to get a huge play with WR Daniel Irons catching the ball down the field, before tossing it to WR LeRoy Krueger to take it deeper into field goal range.
K Donald Brewer would line up to kick it for the surprise win but would miss with the wind pushing the ball to the right and through the endzone.
S Frazier Brooks did have a huge interception which he took back to the house and gave the Blue Wings a 10-0 lead.

London Tigers - 17, Louisville Thunder - 27 - Western Fair Stadium - July 10, 1960 - Weather: Windy
1st Q
0-7 LOU - DTD INT S Johnny Berger
0-10 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
2nd Q
0-17 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
3-17 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
3rd Q
10-17 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
10-24 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
4th Q
17-24 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
17-27 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost

The Louisville Thunder came up with another strong performance and another strong win.
The defence was the key with S Johnny Berger and DB Jayden Mills both grabbing picks, including Berger getting a touchdown on his.
The Tigers were still able to get into the endzone through the air, but they were not able to stall the Thunder offence in the game.
Louisville seems to be able to find the weaknesses within the teams they are playing and have been able to exploit them.

Wow, it's rare enough to see one tie, but two? That's for sure gonna be in a Secret Base video one day.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

The 0-3 start for my gold stars has to be up their in terms of worst starts in franchise history. I can’t remember another season that they were winless there 3 weeks or maybe I just have a bad memory.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Wow, we sure have had some surprises so far with three weeks in the books, especially with Worcester being 2-0-1 so far despite how much of a mess their front office is. That being said, it would not be surprising to me if the Athletics ended up imploding later in the season.

Stavros Black is putting in a pair of touchdowns for Louisville, trying to hold off Greg Dix. And the Thunder are looking good on a whole.

Imagine the chances of not only two ties in the same week, but what would be the chances of two ties in a week that had the same score.

You would remember correctly as they have never started an NAAF season 0-3. It's looking like a rough rebuilding year for the Gold Stars, who have just run into too many issues on their defence.

Worcester is surprising for sure, QB Gene Bishop seems to be a big factor as well as LB Scotty Williams who seems to be willing this team on game after game. It will be tough to maintain for sure, but they have thus far put themselves in a good position.

Tigers have had a tough 1-2 start, but you can make the argument that they have one of the toughest schedules to start the season taking on Louisville twice, Ottawa, and Long Island, while Montreal likely has one of the easier starts with Providence twice, Indiana, and Buffalo thus far. London is still a great team, they have just run into some trouble to start the year.

I don't think Stavros has to worry about Mr. Dix for a few more seasons...either way guess he is making the most of his opportunity at the moment.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1960 Week 4

Buffalo Blue Wings - 27, Worcester Athletics - 30 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - July 14, 1960 - 7 PM ET - TNF - Weather: Rain
1st Q
7-0 BUF - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
7-3 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
2nd Q
10-3 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
10-6 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
10-13 WOR - RTD RB Lawrence Sharp
3rd Q
17-13 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
17-20 WOR - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Zachariah Pembroke
4th Q
20-20 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
27-20 BUF - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
27-27 WOR - RTD RB Lawrence Sharp
27-30 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin

A late field goal from Athletics’ kicker Elvis Franklin was the difference between the Athletics and the Blue Wings.
The Athletics, unfortunately, fell behind 27-20 after QB Gene Bishop fumbled the football on a big hit which also took him out of the game.
QB Terry Bourbon would come in to replace him and would make the most of the opportunity and would go on to lead the Athletics on the comeback to win the game and keep the team unbeaten so far this season.
RB Jimmy Golden had his first career touchdown for the Blue Wings in the 3rd quarter to give them back the lead.

Louisville Thunder - 16, Ottawa Royals - 31 - Thunder Stadium - July 15, 1960 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-7 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
0-14 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
2nd Q
3-14 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
3-17 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafeyette
3rd Q
9-17 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
9-24 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> TE Jervonte Howell
4th Q
16-24 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Marty Jay
16-31 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov

Ottawa came alive with a change of strategy against the Thunder, letting RB Alexei Volkov take charge on offence.
Volkov had one of the best games of his career taking in 3 touchdowns and rushing for 164 yards in the win.
QB Leonidas Dumont was able to keep the Thunder in it but an interception to Royals DB Uzzia Hayes in 4th led to Volkov’s 3rd touchdown of the game which ultimately became the dagger.

Indiana Victors - 11, Boston Independents - 34 - Victory Stadium - July 16, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-7 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Clyde McIntosh
3-7 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
2nd Q
3-14 BOS - RTD RB Eddie Thompson
4-14 IND - Single K Ross Poindexter
4-21 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm
3rd Q
11-21 IND - PTD QB Andrew Sexton -> WR Angus Stevenson
11-24 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
3rd Q
11-27 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
11-34 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan

Boston continued onto their second win of the season with a huge win over the Victors.
WR Ellis Lindholm had a TD in his return and Boston’s offence had lots of confidence moving the ball throughout the game.
Indiana had a wild game with RB Rodney Clark re-aggravating an injury from last week and then QB Stanley Troyer leaving the game with a minor injury.
QB Andrew Sexton got his first true action since the 1954 season and threw a touchdown in the game, but he also would leave the game with an injury in the 4th which meant QB Caldwell Higgins III would finish out the game.LB Brent Harper had a strong game with a forced fumble and 10 tackles for the Independents.

Long Island Raiders - 10, London Tigers - 15 - Long Island Stadium - July 16, 1960 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
0-3 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
2nd Q
0-9 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
3rd Q
7-9 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Wilson Queensgate
7-12 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
4th Q
10-12 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
10-15 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth

With the Raiders’ struggles on offence, they focused more on their defence, which was able to stall out the Tigers on several drives in the game, however, the Tigers also had a strong defensive performance and would keep the Raiders from scoring.
The Tigers’ offence didn’t need to do a lot to get the win, but they just kept moving the ball and eventually would get a field goal or even close enough for a touchdown to go up 9-0 at the half.
LB Aengus Lynch and DB Jackson Miles had turnovers for the Tigers while LB Gene Benson and DL Vernon Spears were able to get takeaways for the Raiders.WR Wilson Queensgate also scored the first touchdown of his career in this game.

Montreal Rouge - 30, Providence Gold Stars - 28 - Mount Royal Stadium - July 17, 1960 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
3-0 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
2nd Q
3-7 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Sammy Moss
10-7 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
3rd Q
17-7 MTL - PTD QB Stanislav Ovechkin -> TE Eli Grant
17-14 PRO - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
17-21 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Christian Venegas
4th Q
24-21 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
27-21 MTL- FG K Arthur Kettinger
27-28 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Christian Venegas
30-28 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger

Montreal and Providence had a back and forth affair that ended with Montreal getting a late kick to win the game.
Providence’s offence finally showed its ability in the game as O’Rourke threw for 3 touchdowns which put them up 28-27 late, but the defence was unable to stop the Rouge from getting the game-winning field goal.
DL Calias McDonough did grab a forced fumble for the Gold Stars while Montreal’s DB Jontray Cox had a pick.
With the win, Montreal has their first 4-0 start since 1949.

A battle of field goals in the rain once again in a gritty match between the Gold Stars and the Raiders.
RB Connor Riley did what he could from the backfield against the weaker Providence defence, scoring a touchdown in the process.
RB Marcus Devonshire also did what he could against the injury-riddled Raiders' defence and got the Gold Stars into scoring range many times in the game.
There were only two fumbles in the game with each team grabbing one; DL Kenny Evans for Providence and DL Vernon Spears for Long Island.

Louisville Thunder - 23, Buffalo Blue Wings - 14 - Thunder Stadium - July 23, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Rain

More field goals galore in Louisville for another rainy Saturday afternoon, however, Louisville getting to the endzone twice was the key to getting them their 3rd win of the season.
S Johnny Berger came through with a huge forced fumble on RB Johnnie Stafford, and LB Silas O’Brien got one as well.
Buffalo’s defence was not able to get a turnover but still forced Louisville to a few punts throughout.

Boston Independents - 29, Montreal Rouge - 8 - Richardson Stadium - July 23, 1960 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Heavy Rain
1st Q

19-8 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
4th Q
26-8 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> RB Kendall Morgan
29-8 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg

Montreal was completely outclassed in their trip to Boston getting almost completely shut down besides a 3rd quarter run from Mallard-White.
Boston was using their strong run-game to their advantage, as RB Kendall Morgan had himself one of the best games of his career, which included taking in a 45-yard screen pass to the endzone.
LB Brent Harper and DL Robin Hill both had forced fumbles as well.

London Tigers - 45, Worcester Athletics - 17 - Western Fair Stadium - July 24,1960 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear

31-17 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
4th Q
38-17 LDN - QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Wilbert Benjamin
45-17 LDN - DTD FUM DL Olympus Heights

The London Tigers flexed their strength putting up 45 points on the unbeaten Athletics who were starting to suffer from injuries after their hot start.QB Riley Kiernan had a stellar game throwing 4 touchdowns against the weaker secondary of the Athletics. The Athletics put up a fight in the 2nd quarter, but they just could not catch up to the Tigers at the end of the day.DL Olympus Heights pretty much sealed the game blowing up a screen-play to RB Bernard Alston.

Ottawa Royals - 38, Indiana Victors - 12 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - July 24, 1960 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q

31-12 IND - PTD QB Stanley Troyer -> WR Alexei Dubois
4th Q

The Royals dominated the Victors to remain as the last unbeaten team in the NAAF.
Alexei Volkov was strong once again as the Royals let Jean Matieau take a bit of a break again, he ended up taking in 3 touchdowns on the day.
The defence also made their presence with DB Mingan Oliver and S Randall Green bringing in an interception each, and DL Olaf Viktorsson and LB Killian Reed had a fumble.DL William Sanderson did get a fumble on the day, but that was all.
