1909 Super Series Bracket
For the third year in a row, a committee of media personnel from around the state met in St. Paul to seed the 8 League champions of the MAHL for the 1909 Kellogg Cup Super Series.
The defending champions, Mill City, get the top seed with the reigning runner-ups from Eveleth getting the 2 seed. White Bear Lake gets the 3 spot, giving the SPHA that seed for the third year in a row. Brainerd edged out Duluth for the 4 and 5 spots but that matchup could go either way. Park Rapids earned the 6 seed with Crookston and Warroad getting the 7 and 8 spots respectively.
Who are you pulling for? What are your predictions? Let me know, comments are always appreciated!

1909 Kellogg Cup Quarterfinals
Mill City Hockey Club vs Warroad Hockey Club
The opening game of the 1909 Kellogg Cup Super Series saw the defending MAHL champs take on Warroad, a town of just about 900 on the shores of Lake of the Woods on the Canadian Border. The crowd was filled with Mill City fans, outnumbering their opponents entire town by 3 or 4 times. The Millers gave them plenty to cheer about in the first, unloading an offensive barrage to take a 5-1 lead into the first intermission. Warroad netted the next two but Mill City got them back to make it 7-3. That would prove to be the final score, sending the Mighty Millers to the Semifinals and keeping their dreams of a repeat alive.
Brainerd Hockey Club vs Duluth Hockey Club
We had a classic in the second game of the tournament between Brainerd and Duluth. Duluth were actually in front for most of the game, scoring first and remaining in front until the Lumberjacks tied it up with 5 minutes left to play. The momentum completely swung in favor of Brainerd who quickly buried the go-ahead goal before Duluth knew what had hit them. The North Shore champions were forced to be more aggressive in the final minute, giving up an odd man rush opportunity to Brainerd that they capped off with a one timer into the twine to extend their lead to two. The final whistle rang out shortly after to send Brainerd to the Semifinals, knocking out Duluth by a score of 8-6.
Eveleth Hockey Club vs Crookston Hockey Club
Hey kid, you like goals? Then I have the team for you! The Eveleth Hockey Club showed everyone why they are still considered one of the best teams in the country, skating circles around a very good Crookston Hockey Club and sending a very clear message to the rest of the competition that they aren’t holding anything back. When the dust settled the Crooks found themselves in a 9 goal hole. The Reds cruised their way back to the Semifinals with a 14-5 victory over the RRHL champs.
White Bear Lake Hockey Club vs Park Rapids Hockey Club
The best game of the first day happened to be the nightcap as White Bear Lake and Park Rapids battled for 60 minutes only to wind up deadlocked at 6-6. For just the third time in Super Series history, we were headed to overtime to determine who faces Eveleth in the Semis. Both teams were cautious to start the extra frame, not wanting to make that costly mistake that could end their teams season. Things finally opened up in the back half of the period with both teams getting a couple decent looks at goal denied by the netminders. Eventually something was going to have to give and it was the White Bears of White Bear Lake that took the most of it. A bad Park Rapids pass in their own zone was intercepted by a White Bear Lake forward who faked a shot before dishing it off to his trailing teammate who took a quick shot that beat the Park Rapids goaltender glove side to send White Bear Lake to the Semifinals with a 7-6 win in overtime.

Methinks it's gonna be Mill City vs. Eveleth again...it's gonna be an annual matchup like UW-Whitewater vs. Mount Union was for the Stagg Bowl for a good stretch early this century.

1909 Kellogg Cup Semifinals
Mill City Hockey Club vs Brainerd Hockey Club
Brainerd came out quick and drew first blood, but Mill City wouldn’t stay down for long. The Millers bounced back to lead 2-1 after one and never looked back. Brainerd was able to net two more in the second and one in the third but it wouldn’t be nearly enough to keep up with the Mighty Millers who unloaded 3 in the second and 4 in the third to take the game by a score of 9-4. Mill City is heading back to the Kellogg Cup Final where they’ll look to defend their crown.
Eveleth Hockey Club vs White Bear Lake Hockey Club
Eveleth picked up where they left off the night before, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead before White Bear Lake could respond. White Bear Lake made it 3-2 early in the second and it stayed there until the Reds extended their lead to 2 with 21 seconds left in the second. The third period was an offensive firefight with the teams combining for 7 goals in the frame. The Bears did their best and put up a good fight, but they couldn’t shut down the Reds dynamic offensive attack. Eveleth has punched their ticket back to the Kellogg Cup Final, defeating White Bear Lake by a score of 8-5.
For the third straight year it’s the Millers vs the Reds. Eveleth took home the Cup in 1907 and Mill City in 1908, but now it’s time for the rubber match. Will Mill City go back-to-back or will Eveleth bring the Cup back to the Iron Range?
