Re: MAHL Redux

1907 Standings pt. 1

Central Lakes Hockey League
New league, same trophy, same winner. The inaugural champions of the CLHL are the Brainerd Hockey Club, running away with the Lake Bowl for the 3rd year in a row and 4th time in club history. Aitkin came second and was the only other team in the league to finish with 20+ a win season. St. Cloud, Alexandria, Sauk Rapids, & Little Falls round out the top half of the table, all with winning records. Melrose and Mille Lacs had solid seasons for expansion clubs, doing better than expected despite still finishing below .500 for the year. Staples and Princeton each finished at 11-18-4 with Long Prairie just behind them. Finally we have this year's punching bag, Sauk Center. The team really struggled to get going, waiting until their 14th game of the year before they finally got their first ever win.

Headwater Hockey Association
There was never really a doubt who was taking home the Headwater Cup with Bemidji starting the season on an absolute heater, winning 12 of their first 15 games and never looking back. This is Bemidji’s first title since their CMHL crown back in 1900. It was a big year in Beltrami County with the Red Lake Nation and Blackduck Hockey Clubs making it a perfect 3/3 in the top three for the Beltrami County clubs. The Pelicans of Pelican Rapids came fourth and were the only other team with a winning record after 32 games. Fergus Falls and Detroit were each solid but were inconsistent and lost too much against teams they should be beating. There wasn’t much separating the bottom three, each of them finishing with 11 win campaigns. Despite being bottom of the table Wadena, Park Rapids, & Frazee still had decent hockey teams, evident by all of them reaching double digit win totals.

Iron Range Hockey League
The Eveleth Hockey Club continues to make a case for being one of the best teams in the entire country, winning the IRHL in its inaugural season and taking home the Miners Memorial Trophy for the third year in a row and 7th time in the last 8 years. There was a bit of a gap between the top four and the rest of the pack with Ely, Soudan Mine, & Sparta doing their best to keep pace with the Mighty Reds of Eveleth. The rest of the league had losing records, but there really weren’t any bad hockey teams with anyone capable of winning on any given day. Hibbing, Nashwauk, Grand Rapids, & Virginia were able to get to double digit win totals while Keewatin, Biwabik, & Chisholm had a tougher go of things at the bottom of the ladder.

North Shore Hockey Association
The champions of the North Shore reside in Two Harbors. The team was described by local papers as playing “like a pack of timberwolves", working as a unit to find weak spots in the defense that they can exploit. The two and three spots went to the Duluth squads with Duluth edging out their crosstown rivals, Zenith City, by just 2 points. There was a noticeable gap in the standings between the top and bottom halves of the league despite Cloquet and Superior both boasting quality hockey teams in their own right, they just weren’t quite at the level of the top three this season. Expansion side Proctor was expected to finish last and that’s exactly what happened, though they can take some consolation in winning the season series against Superior 3-2-1.

Re: MAHL Redux

1907 Standings pt. 2

Northland Hockey League
There was no league with more parity this year than the NLHL with only 5 wins separating second and last. The only outlier was Kittson County who was a step above the rest of most of the league, finishing with an impressive 19 win campaign on their way to becoming North Star Cup champions. Pembina County and Morden were the only other teams to finish with winning records but Grafton wasn’t far behind, ending the year with at .500 on the season. Fort Frances had a losing record but finished in fourth, just one point behind Grafton. Roseau, Warroad, Baudette, & International Falls make up the bottom four, though none could be considered “bad” in any way.

Red River Hockey League
The Red River was a bloodbath this season with the top four all finishing within 5 points of each other. Grand Forks took home the cup with the only 20+ win campaign in the league, clinching their first title in team history. Warren, Red Lake Falls, & Thief River Falls each finished with 19 win seasons. There were a couple games between the top four and fifth place finisher Crookston, but the Crooks did manage to finish above .500 for the season as they placed middle of the pack. Fargo and Moorhead were next, losing most nights but getting a couple upsets here and there. Finally at the bottom of the table we have Ada and East Grand Forks, both having seasons they would like to forget as they each failed to reach 10 wins.

Minneapolis Hockey League
It was the Minneapolis teams against the world with Mill City, Powderhorn, Lake Shore, & Minneapolis filling out the top four in that order. The Millers squeaked out their 7th consecutive Washburn Cup (9th overall), finishing just one win ahead of the rest of the Minneapolis based clubs who all ended with 19 win campaigns. Outside Minneapolis, there were no teams to finish with winning records, the closest being Anoka who ended with at .500 on the year. Plymouth finished next in 6th, being the only other team to break the double digit win threshold. Down in the basement we have Richfield, West Minneapolis, & Brooklyn who wound up on the losing side more often than not.

St. Paul Hockey Association
The White Bears of White Bear Lake have gone back-to-back and will represent the SPHA in the first ever Super Series, denying the St. Paul Athletic Club from getting to host in their home arena with the Saints finishing just two points behind the Bears at season's end. The East Side Hockey Club was also particularly strong this year, keeping pace with the top two but falling short after losing 3 of their last 5 games. One of the biggest stories in the league this year was the incredible turnaround by Hudson who went from winning just 2 games a year ago to having a winning record and finishing 4th just a year later. Como Park and the Phoenix Athletic Club tied for 5th but Como won the season series over the Phoenix 2-1. West St. Paul, Hastings, North St. Paul, & Stillwater weren’t bad by any means, but they weren’t good either, finishing in the bottom half of the standings with losing records. South St. Paul was another big story this year in the SPHA. SSP came into this season with high expectations and were almost universally picked to finish top 5, so to say 9-22-2 was a disappointment would be an understatement. In last we have the Rose Hockey Club who had another tough go of things, dropping their all-time win percentage to a measly 0.284 over their 8 year history.

Re: MAHL Redux

1907 Super Series
The time has come and the stage is set for the first ever best-on-best hockey tournament in the state of Minnesota, the 1907 Kellogg Cup Super Series.

A committee of media personnel from across the state came together in St. Paul to rank the 8 league champions for seeding in the Super Series. The Eveleth Hockey Club was unanimously selected as the #1 seed with the twin cities representatives White Bear Lake and Mill City getting the 2 and 3 spots. Two Harbors was selected as the final favorite, edging out 5th seed Brainerd for a quarterfinal matchup many could see go either way. Bemidji got the 6 seed, Kittson County the 7, & finally Grand Forks was seeded 8th.

Who are you pulling for? What are your predictions? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Re: MAHL Redux

Visually, the Red River league has to be the most overwhelming sensory situation night-to-night. Fans of this league know to pop a couple Tylenol before puck drop to avoid post game migraines. The stripe variety is insane!

Speaking of, if you aren't already planning to, have you considered creating historic uniform trends / quirks grouped by league throughout the MAHL timeline? I could see isolated trends happening, especially if interleague play isn't common. For example, a handful of teams from a league could continue using left breast logo placement long after every other league moved on to larger logos placed in the middle.

Haha I love me some stripes!

And yes, I definitely expect there to be different trends that are more common in one league over another. I want to try and make each league feel as unique as possible but it's hard with there being so many leagues.

Re: MAHL Redux

This is just me, But I would have the 8 League Champions duke it out in the 7-game Round Robin Super Series.  Then the top 4 teams advance to the knockout round.

I got Eveleth over Mill City in the Final.

You've gotta remember that these are just normal people with jobs and lives. It wouldn't be realistic to have them miss potentially weeks of time off work to play a game, especially since they're all amateurs and do not get paid to play hockey.

Re: MAHL Redux

1907 Kellogg Cup Quarterfinals

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Grand Forks Hockey Club
The first ever Super Series contest saw the top ranked Eveleth Reds of the Iron Range Hockey League take on the Red River champions from Grand Forks. Eveleth is considered by many to be one of, if not the best hockey teams in the country so nobody was expecting Grand Forks to put up much of a fight. However, they didn’t expect to see the slaughter that unfolded on the afternoon of March 12th, 1907. The boys from “da Range” went off, unloading an offensive barrage that sent Grand Forks back to North Dakota with their tails tucked between their legs. When the final whistle blew after 60 minutes of play the score read 18-3 in favor of Eveleth, sending the Reds to the semifinals in dominant fashion.

Two Harbors Hockey Club vs Brainerd Hockey Club
The most anticipated quarterfinal matchup lived up to the hype with Two Harbors and Brainerd locked in an evenly matched battle that went back and forth all game long. There were four lead changes before the whistle sounded to end regulation with the score tied at 6-6, giving us our first playoff game in Super Series history. It didn’t take too long before we had a winner with the Lumberjacks catching Two Harbors in a bad line change, putting Brainerd in on a 3 on 1. The initial shot was stopped, but the rebound still laid in the goaltenders skates. The Brainerd rover was able to get his stick on the loose puck before the goalie could find it, poking it across the goal line and winning the game for his team. Brainerd advances to the semifinals with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Two Harbors in overtime.

White Bear Lake Hockey Club vs Kittson County Hockey Club
White Bear Lake had the support of the crowd at a sold out St. Paul Hippodrome with nearly all of the 6,700 fans in attendance pulling for the representatives of the St. Paul Hockey Association, wanting to show that their league is the premier league of the MAHL. Perhaps the atmosphere was more than the small town boys from Kittson County were used to and that’s why they started off so slow, allowing White Bear Lake to take an early 4 goal lead, but whatever the reason it put them in a hole that they would need to claw themselves out of. The White Bears kept to their gameplan and didn’t give their opponents an inch. Kittson County was able to net a handful of goals, but they couldn’t keep pace with White Bear Lake. After the final whistle sounded the scoreboard read 11-5 in favor of White Bear Lake, sending the Bears to the semifinals and eliminating the Northland League champions.

Mill City Hockey Club vs Bemidji Hockey Club
The streetcars were packed to the gills all day long, taking Mill City fans across the river to watch their boys in white take on the Headwater Hockey Association champions from Bemidji. The Millers struck first blood but Bemidji netted three in quick succession to turn the game on its head. The offense would explode for both teams in the second period, leaving Mill City up 11-7 after two. Bemidji scored less than a minute into the third to make it a 3 goal game but Mill City came back with a vengeance. They scored four unanswered goals, taking the game by a score of 15-8 and punching their ticket to the semifinals.
