Re: MAHL Redux

1901 Standings

Arrowhead Hockey Association
After winning their first title a year ago, Eveleth came out this year and did something unheard of to claim the Miners Memorial Trophy for the second year in a row. The fearsome Reds finished the year perfect, winning in dominant fashion against nearly everyone. Some are even arguing that this year's Eveleth Hockey Club was the best hockey team in the country. Duluth finished in second, boasting a top class hockey club in their own right. Both Two Harbors and Ely finished with 10 win seasons but it was the Two Harbors team that ended up on the podium, losing just 6 games all year. Superior finished .500 on the season but tied with the Soudan Mine team who had both less wins than Superior & a winning record. Zenith City and Cloquet were solid teams that wound up on the losing side more often than not, finishing 7th & 8th respectively. The bottom of the table had three Iron Range squads; Grand Rapids, Hibbing, & Queen City all with seasons to forget. The Queen City Hockey Club was also dealing with the aftermath of a major fire that broke out in Virginia on June 7th, 1900. The fire burnt down 125 buildings, destroying most of the city including the entire business district, and they are still in the process of rebuilding.

Central Minnesota Hockey League
The CMHL was an absolute bloodbath with six teams in contention for the Lake Bowl as the season came to an end. When the smoke settled it was the St. Cloud Hockey Club who reigned supreme, edging out the defending champs from Bemidji by just one point with an 11-5-2 record. Fergus Falls, Brainerd, & Detroit all finished one win behind the top two, and Little Falls was only two games back at the end of the year. Alexandria was a completely different team from a year ago, going from a one win season to a winning season in just one year. Despite the improvement, they still finished down in 7th. There is a noticeable drop to the bottom three with Aitkin, Park Rapids, & Wadena combining for just 5 wins against the rest of the league (not including head-to-head between the three).

Red River Hockey League
After finishing runner-up the past two years, the Crookston Hockey Club has finally taken home the Red River Cup, winning it for the first time in team history. It wasn’t easy though with Grand Forks, Fargo, & Red Lake Falls all finishing just one win behind the champs. East Grand Forks improved to .500 in their second year, followed by Thief River Falls who suffered from an injury to their star player early in the season. TRF wasn't able to pull off the three-peat like they had hoped going in, ending the season with a losing record for the first time in club history. There really weren’t any “bad” teams in the RRHL this year but Pembina County, Warren, Moorhead, & Kittson County all ended with losing seasons.

Twin Cities Hockey Association
The Mill City Hockey Club is back on top of the Twin Cities, winning their 3rd Washburn Cup in the past 5 years. The Millers ended the year undefeated, though they did have 4 ties, and were also argued by some to be one of, if not the, best hockey teams in the United States of America. In second was the St. Paul Athletic Club who went undefeated in every game not against Mill City, ending the year 18-2-4. It was really just a two horse race this year with the top two finishing more than 5 wins ahead of the next best team. That next best team was Powderhorn who did better than most expected in their inaugural campaign, finishing with just 8 losses. We had two more teams finish with winning records, those being Minneapolis & White Bear Lake. There were also two teams who finished the year at .500, South St. Paul in 6th and East Side in 7th. Como Park, Anoka, Lake Shore, & Stillwater all had 8 win seasons and the Rose & Phoenix Clubs finished at the bottom with 6 wins each.

And thus concludes the 1900/01 season. Please let me know what you think, comments are always appreciated!

Re: MAHL Redux

WOW!  I don't think anybody ever pulled off a perfect season even in MAHL 1.0...but even so, Eveleth is still setting the pace for greatness as in that last one.

Already eagerly anticipating what's next as the clubs and leagues start to come together...

Eveleth is here and they don't look like they'll be going anywhere anytime soon, boasting an entire 7 man roster of stars.

Glad to have you here and excited to see what you think of everything to come!

Re: MAHL Redux

1901/02
In national news, President William McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, NY on September 6th, 1901. News of the assassination shocked the nation and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt has assumed the presidency.

Here in the world of Minnesota hockey we had three new clubs form, two in-state and one from just across the border in Wisconsin.

Chisholm Hockey Club
The Chisholm Hockey Club is based in Chisholm, MN. Chisholm is a city of 7,700, making it the third largest city in the Iron Range only behind Virginia & Hibbing. Like other Iron Range towns, Chisholm is reliant on the iron ore mining industry. The team wears crimson & gold stripes with an old english C on the chest inside of a crimson stripe. They will play their home games on a frozen Longyear Lake.

Re: MAHL Redux

Moving south we have the other two expansion clubs who are both set to join the ever growing Twin Cities Hockey Association.

Hudson Hockey Club
The Hudson Hockey Club is based in Hudson, WI but also represents North Hudson & the Town of Hudson. Hudson is a city of about 4,200 and is the county seat of St. Croix County. Located on the Willow & St. Croix Rivers, Hudson is a key city in the lumber industry with numerous mills and log riders transporting fallen trees down river. The team decided on black and blue striped sweaters and socks with a stylized H in white sewn on the front for Hudson. They will play their home games on a frozen piece of the St. Croix River.

Re: MAHL Redux

West St. Paul Hockey Club
The West St. Paul Hockey Club is based in West St. Paul, MN but also represents the West Side neighborhood of St. Paul which is separated from the rest of St. Paul by the Mississippi. West St. Paul is a city of a little over 1,800 and despite its actually being south of St. Paul it is called West St. Paul because it is on the west bank of the Mississippi River. WSP & the West Side of St. Paul are also home to the largest Mexican population in the state, giving the area a distinct culture in a state full of primarily Scandinavians & Germans. The team wears black sweaters with black and gold stripes on the sleeves and a WStP monogram over the players hearts. They will play their home games outdoors on Thompson Lake.

Re: MAHL Redux

We had four teams make some adjustments to their looks in one way or another this offseason, one team from each league.

Soudan Mine Hockey Club
Up in the Arrowhead the Soudan Mine Hockey Club introduced a whole new look, dropping the stripes entirely on the torso in favor of black with an oval shaped S logo on the chest. Their distinct striping pattern remains on the sleeves and is made thinner. The socks are also updated to match the new sleeve stripes.

Re: MAHL Redux

Warren Hockey Club
Over in the Red River League we have Warren making the biggest change of any team this offseason, introducing new uniforms as well as a new logo. The new logo is very similar to their old W but the dimensions are a little different and it now has serifs at the top. They also slightly tweaked their number font to one with serifs as well.

Their new sweaters are primarily white but retain the solid green sleeves and socks from their previous set. Their new logo sits on the front in green.

Re: MAHL Redux

East Side Hockey Club
Finally we go to the Twin Cities where the East Side Hockey Club has some exciting news. After playing their first 5 years on Lake Phalen, the team would now be playing their home games at the newly built East Side Rink which can seat up to 500 spectators.

Coinciding with the move, the club decided to create a new uniform. Their new sweater keeps the same blue and white color scheme but adds a white stripe across the chest with the club’s ES monogram inside. The sleeve cuffs are now white and a single white stripe is added to their blue socks.
