Re: Velo (Team Bicycle Racing Sport)

Tuesday, August 13, 1899 – Manhattan, New York
Big news for the sport of Velo.  It looks right now like a franchise will be coming to the most important market in the country.  A group of wealthy men, including P.T. Barnum and Andrew Carnegie are presently setting plans to build a new Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.  A few of the other investors involved in that project have recently come together to purchase the first of what will be two expansion teams for the 1891 season.  The group is headed by J.P. Morgan, who will be the majority and controlling owner of the team.  He will hold 70% ownership.  His partners will be James Stillman, Darius Ogden Mills, and William Waldorf Astor.  Each of those men will posses 10% of the team.

While NVF Commissioner Hubert Gotti continues to look to sale one more expansion franchise, work continues to move forward on development of the new franchise he has sold.  Today from New York City, J.P. Morgan announced that his new team will be simply named the Manhattan Velo Club.  He shared with the public the logo for the team today.  Uniform designs are still to come.

Wednesday, October 2, 1899 – Montreal, Quebec, Canada
The National Velo Federation is going international.  The second of the expansion franchises to start play in the 1891 season has been sold.  The purchasers are a partnership between two Canadian sports promoters, James Creighton, and Louis Rubenstein.  Creighton will posses 75% ownership of the team while the remaing 25% will belong to Rubenstein.  Creighton will therefore be the controlling owner of the club.  The team will make the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal, Quebec, Canada their home arena.  Creighton promised a logo and uniform designs by Christmas 1899.

As promised James Creighton has the details of his forthcoming velo team to share before Christmas.  Creighton has chosen to go simple for his team name as well.  He is calling it Club de Montreal.  Today he released the logo and uniform designs for the team.

There is more to come.  I got to tell you when you last asked about expansion I was thinking it was a little further out on my outline but I was mistaken.  Still, I'm kind of rushing through the 1890 season because as the league and sport grows in the coming years, I think it will get a lot more interesting.

Unsettling news comes tonight out of Boston.  In last nights game St. Louis Steamers Leadoff Benedito Holt crashed in the second set of a game against the Boston Checkers.  The crash was hard and left Holt with a broken leg.  The team understood Holt would likely not be available for the remainder of the year.  What was not known at the time was how hard Holt hit his head in the fall.  Last night while in a recovery center in Boston, Holt’s brain swelled up and has caused the star player to slip into a coma.
