NHL Promotion-Relegation Simulation

So if you've read my football timeline, you may be expecting a more in depth timeline. This one relies on OTL regular season records to show who would make it to the playoffs. That aside, the playoffs are all simulated, using the same site as the NFL-PCFL TL.

The basic idea of the thread is what if, shortly after the 6 team expansion (three seasons), the NHL divided the league into a First and Second Division. The initial plan was for the league to have seven teams in each division for the 1971-72 NHL season. The teams who had finished in the top 7 would join the First Division, and the lower 7 would make up the Second Division.

In keeping with my preferred setup for playoffs, the plan is for six teams in each division to compete for a title. (There are no divisions within the First or Second Divisions) The only difference from this, is that the Saint Louis Blues initially boycotted the promotion and relegation (they would return to the NHL the next season), leaving the second division with only six teams for its first season.

The worst team in the First Division will be relegated to the Second Division for the next season, while the Second Division teams compete for promotion to the First Division. Usually only the winner will be promoted, but if expansion occurs teams can be promoted without winning a title. Another point, the lowest seed in any given playoff match hosts the first two games, and the fifth game, with the higher seed hosting the rest. This is so, if the higher seed sweeps, they finish that sweep at home.

So this is the first season

1971-72 NHL Season

First Division
1. Boston Bruins: 119 ##
2. New York Rangers: 109 #
3. Chicago Blackhawks: 109 ***
4. Montreal Canadiens: 108 **
5. Minnesota North Stars: 86 *
6. Toronto Maple Leafs: 80 *
7. Philadelphia Flyers: 66

4: Chicago Blackhawks over Toronto Maple Leafs: 2
4: Montreal Canadiens over Minnesota North Stars: 0
4: Montreal Canadiens over Boston Bruins: 0
4: New York Rangers over Chicago Blackhawks: 1

4: New York Rangers over Montreal Canadiens: 1

Second Division
1. Detroit Red Wings: 76 ##
2. Pittsburgh Penguins: 66 #
3. California Golden Seals: 60 ***
4. Buffalo Sabres: 51 **
5. Los Angeles Kings: 49 *
6. Vancouver Canucks: 48 *

4: Vancouver Canucks over California Golden Seals: 1
4: Los Angeles Kings over Buffalo Sabres: 3
4: Detroit Red Wings over Vancouver Canucks: 0
4: Pittsburgh Penguins over Los Angeles Kings: 1

Gordie Howe Cup
4: Detroit Red Wings over Pittsburgh Penguins: 2

In the first season of the First Division, seven teams competed for the right to win a Stanley Cup, with six making the postseason, and the last team facing relegation. The first four teams all had at least 100 points, with the Bruins and Rangers finishing in first and second, and earning a first round bye. In last place, the Philadelphia Flyers were demoted.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the first round saw the Toronto Maple Leafs fall to the Chicago Blackhawks in six, and a sweep of the Minnesota North Stars by the Montreal Canadiens. In the second round, the fourth seed Canadiens swept the Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers defeated Chicago in five games. In the first Stanley Cup Finals of the modern (PR Era) era, the New York Rangers toppled the Montreal Canadiens, and won the Stanley Cup Finals.

In the second division, every team qualified for the playoff due to the boycott of the Blues. In first and second, the Detroit Red Wings (with 76 points) and the Pittsburgh Penguins earned a first round bye. The other four playoff bound teams included the California Golden Seals, Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks.

In the Gordie Howe Playoffs first round (Named after the great player of course), the last place Vancouver Canucks beat the Golden Seals in five, while the Los Angeles Kings went to game 7 against the Buffalo Sabres. In the second round, the Red Wings swept the Canucks, while the Penguins beat the Kings in 5. In the first ever Gordie Howe Cup (usually referred to as the Howe Cup), the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in 6.

Re: NHL Promotion-Relegation Simulation

It seems odd to have the Second Division named after Gordie Howe, who was still playing at the time. I LOVE the idea of the Gordie Howe playoffs, so I'd maybe go with something more generic until after he retires in 1980.

4: Atlanta Flames over Los Angeles Kings: 3
4: Buffalo Sabres over Atlanta Flames: 2

Gordie Howe Cup
4: Buffalo Sabres over Philadelphia Flyers: 2

Due to expansion, both the Second Division champion and the runner up (the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins joined the First Division, while the Atlanta Flames and New York Islanders joined the Second Division, alongside the demoted Philadelphia Flyers. The Saint Louis Blues, who were returning to the NHL, were forced to join the Second Division as penance for their boycott last season.

In the First Division, the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins managed to earn a first round bye. With eight teams, there were now two teams that didn't make the playoffs, the last place (and relegated) Toronto Maple Leafs, and the seventh place Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, in the first round, the defending champion New York Rangers, bested the Minnesota North Stars in seven, while the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings in six. In the second round, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Chicago Blackhawks in six, while the Boston Bruins beat the New York Rangers in seven. In the Stanley Cup Finals, the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins went to six, where the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup.

In the Second Division, the Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers both earned a first round bye, in what was a close divisional race. In the end, the Sabres finished with 88 points, while the Flyers would finish at 85 points. The expansion Atlanta Flames, who were expected to miss the playoffs, finished in the top six, fifth over all to be exact. In last place, the New York Islanders finished with 30 points, the worst team in the NHL (since they finished in last in the lowest current division).

In the Howe Cup Playoffs, in the first round, the Saint Louis Blues swept the Vancouver Canucks, who were once again the lowest seed in the playoffs. Next, the Atlanta Flames surprised the pundits by defeating the Los Angeles Kings in 7. In the second round, the Flames would fall to the Buffalo Sabres, while the Flyers defeated the Blues in 5. And finally, in the Howe Cup Finals, the Sabres defeated the Flyers in six, earning a promotion to the First Division.

4: Philadelphia Flyers over Toronto Maple Leafs: 0

In the 1973-74 season, the First Division saw a close race in the top four, though the Boston Bruins would end up on top. The bottom two out of six that year were the new First Division squad, the Buffalo Sabres (at 76 points) and the Detroit Red Wings (at 68 points), who squeaked past the seventh place Pittsburgh Penguins. The last place Minnesota North Stars thus faced demotion.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs first round, both matchups were sweeps by the higher seeds. The third seed Canadiens swept the sixth seed Red Wings, while the fourth seed New York Rangers swept the fifth seed Buffalo Sabres. Going into the second round, the Rangers upset the first seed Bruins in five. Next, the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Montreal Canadiens in five as well. Going into the Stanley Cup Finals, the Blackhawks swept the Rangers, crushing them utterly, giving the Blackhawks another Stanley Cup Final, and the first in the modern era.

In the Second Division, the Philadelphia Flyers swept aside all they came across, finishing with 112 points. Had they been in the First Division, they may have won a Stanley Cup, but as things were, they would be competing in the Second Division's 1974 postseason. In second, the Toronto Maple Leafs finished with 86 points and played claim to second first round bye.

In the Second Division Playoffs, the first round saw another two sweeps. The Los Angeles Kings (78) and the Atlanta Flames (74) both swept their opponents, with the Kings defeating the Canucks, and the Flames beating the Blues. In the second round, the first seed Flyers beat the Flames in five, while the second seed Maple Leafs battled with the Kings in seven games, finishing the series in Toronto. In the Second Division Title*, the Philadelphia Flyers swept the Toronto Maple Leafs and gained readmission to the NHL's First Division.

Before the season began, the Second Division was expanded to nine teams, with the expansion Kansas City Scouts joining the league. They would fall to the bottom of the Second Division their inaugural campaign, and would finish with a league worst 41 points.

In the First Division, the Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres and the Philadelphia Flyers, all finished with 113 points, finishing in that order. As such, the Canadiens and the Sabres won the first round byes, while the Flyers would host the sixth seed New York Rangers in the postseason. In last place, the Detroit Red Wings were relegated, being 24 points behind the seventh place Chicago Blackhawks.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs of 1975, the first round would see two sweeps. Both the higher seeds won the round, with the third seed Philadelphia Flyers sweeping the New York Rangers, and the fourth seed Boston Bruins beat the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the second round, the first seed Canadiens beat the Bruins, in a six game series. In a bit of an upset, the Flyers beat the second seed Sabres in six, winning the right to play for a Stanley Cup Final. Going up against the Canadiens, the Flyers hung on initially, winning the first two games to make it 2-0. Four games later and the Canadiens were lifting the Stanley Cup in front of a home town crowd.

In the Second Division, the Los Angeles Kings utterly dominated the competition, finishing with 105 points, 17 points ahead of the second place New York Islanders. The Islanders were the story of the second division regular season, making their first ever playoff appearance and earning a first round bye.

In the Second Division Playoffs first round, both matchups went to five games. The third seed Vancouver Canucks beat out the sixth seed Toronto Maple Leafs, and the fifth seed Atlanta Flames upset the fourth seed Saint Louis Blues. In the second round, Los Angeles Kings beat the Atlanta Flames, in five, while the New York Islanders beat the Vancouver Canucks, also in five. In the Second Division Finals, the Kings beat the Islanders giving the Kings the right to enter the First Division.

The 1975-1976 season saw expansion yet again, when the newly minted Washington Capitals joined the Second Division, bringing the total in the division to ten teams. In their first season the Capitals would finish in last, earning just 32 points total. The Kansas City Scouts, in their second and last season in Kansas City finished in ninth, with 36 points. The next season would see their relocation to Denver, where they became the Colorado Rockies, still in the Second Division

The First Division saw four teams post 100 points or more, with the Montreal Canadiens (127) in first, and the Philadelphia Flyers (118) in second, both earning the first round bye. In third and fourth place, the Boston Bruins (113) and Buffalo Sabres (105) would earn the right to host game seven should it come to that. The last two teams to make the postseason, were the Los Angeles Kings (85), who had just joined the First Division following a Second Division title, and the Chicago Blackhawks (82). In second to last, the Pittsburgh Penguins avoided relegation, while the last place New York Rangers were demoted, after finishing 15 points behind the Penguins.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs, in the first round, the Boston Bruins swept the Chicago Blackhawks, while the Buffalo Sabres beat out the Los Angeles Kings in five. In the second round, the Montreal Canadiens swept Buffalo Sabres, where as the third seed Boston Bruins upset the second seed Philadelphia Flyers in six games. In the 1976 Stanley Cup Finals, the Montreal Canadiens dominated the Boston Bruins, who would only win one game in the five game series, giving Montreal yet another Stanley Cup Title.

In the Second Division, the New York Islanders dominated the division, finishing with 101 points, 18 points ahead of the second place Toronto Maple Leafs (83). One point behind Toronto were the Atlanta Flames, and in fourth, the Vancouver Canucks. In last place were the Washington Capitals, and just ahead of them the Kansas City Scouts.

In the Second Division playoffs, in the first round, saw the Atlanta Flames beat the California Golden Seals in a six game series, while the Saint Louis Blues beat the Vancouver Canucks in seven, in a thrilling game in the Pacific Coliseum, that saw the Blues upset the hometown Canucks. In the second round, the first seed New York Islanders swept Saint Louis Blues, while the Flames went to five against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the Second Division title, the New York Islanders faced off against the Atlanta Flames, their expansion mate, winning the title and promotion to the First Division. It was odd, given that the same year the Rangers were demoted, and the Islanders promoted in the same season, leaving one New York team in each division.

Before the season began, the California Golden Seals, a moribund franchise relocated across the country to Cleveland. The name would be changed to the Barons, in honor of the fabled AHL team. As a Second Division team in its short life, the Barons were relatively successful, making the playoffs both seasons in Cleveland.

In the First Division, the top five teams had over 100 points. The Montreal Canadiens, at a remarkable 132 points, finished ahead of the second place Philadelphia Flyers by 20 points. As those two teams had the bye, the first round was left to other teams. (Bruins, Islanders, Sabres & Kings) In second to last the place, the Pittsburgh Penguins stayed the hand of relegation, finishing with 81 points. Far behind them were the last place Chicago Blackhawks, who would be returning to the Second Division.

In the first round of the 1977 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Boston Bruins tackled the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Islanders battled the Buffalo Sabres. In the Boston-Los Angeles series, the Bruins beat the Kings in five, while the Sabres upset the New York Islanders, who were playing in their first First Division season, also in five.

In the second round of the 1977 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the titan Montreal Canadiens went up against the fifth seed Buffalo Sabres, while the Philadelphia Flyers took on the Boston Bruins. The Canadiens swept the Sabres, while the Bruins upset the second seed Flyers in five games.  In the Stanley Cup Finals, the Montreal Canadiens faced the Boston Bruins, a classic matchup of the original six. In the end the series would go to seven, a Montreal victory at home.

In the Second Division of 1977, no team truly dominated. The competition was rife with low scoring games, and a fair share of ties were seen. In first place were the 81 point Toronto Maple Leafs, one point ahead of the second place Atlanta Flames. Also making the playoffs were the Saint Louis Blues (73), the New York Rangers (72), the Minnesota North Stars (64), and the Cleveland Barons (63). The Colorado Rockies also made their debut, finishing in ninth with 54 points.

In the first round of the Second Division playoff of 1977, the Saint Louis Blues played the Cleveland Barons, while the New York Rangers took on the Minnesota North Stars. In a major upset, the Cleveland Barons embarrassed the Saint Louis Blues in five games, only ceding a loss at home to the visiting Blues in game two. In the New York Rangers-Minnesota North Stars bout, the Rangers overcame the North Stars in six, finihnging the series in Madison Square Garden. In the second round of the Second Division playoff, the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the upstart Cleveland Barons in five, while the Atlanta Flames swept the New York Rangers. In the Second Division Finals, the Atlanta Flames overcame Toronto in a game seven in Toronto, winning promotion to the First Division.

In the 1977-78 First Division season, many of the teams were competitive, with five of the six playoff teams posting 100 or more points. In first were the Montreal Canadiens with 129 points, and in second were the 113 point Boston Bruins, with both earning a first round bye. In sixth place, the Atlanta Flames, in their first First Division season, would earn 87 points and would play the third seed New York Islanders in the first round of playoffs. In seventh place, the Los Angeles Kings had 77 points, and in last were the Pittsburgh Penguins with 68 points. With their last place finish, the Penguins would be relegated.

In the first round of the 1978 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the third seed New York Islanders played the sixth seed Atlanta Flames, while the Buffalo Sabres would battle with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Islanders-Flames matchup, which was a replay of the 1976 Second Division Finals, ended in a sweep in the Islanders favor. The Sabres-Flyers series was far closer, with the series ending in a Buffalo Sabres win in 7.  In the second round of the 1978 Stanley Cup Finals, both games went to five, with the Canadiens topping the Sabres, and the Islanders winning in an upset against the Boston Bruins. In the 1978 Stanley Cup Finals, the New York Islanders beat the Canadiens, ending in a game six matchup in Montreal. With the victory the New York Islanders won their first Stanley Cup, and were solidified as the best team in the world.

In the Second Division, the one team that dominated, were the Toronto Maple Leafs. While they had lost the previous Second Division Finals, this team was in many ways better. At 92 points, they were the only team in the second division to post above 85 points, with the second place Chicago Blackhawks only posting 83 points. The rest of the division were unremarkable, with the third seed Detroit Red Wings (78), the fourth seed New York Rangers (73), the fifth seed Colorado Rockies (59) and the sixth seed Cleveland Barons (57).

In the first round of the Second Division playoffs, the Detroit Red Wings played the Cleveland Barons , while the New York Rangers contended with the Colorado Rockies. The Red Wings swept the Barons, who would fold following the postseason. In a five game series, the Colorado Rockies beat the New York Rangers, earning the Red Wings and Rockies entrance to the second round. In the second round, both series would end with a five game bout. The Maple Leafs beat out the Colorado Rockies, while the Chicago Blackhawks outperformed the Detroit Red Wings. In the Second Division Finals, Toronto beat the Blackhawks earning a return to the First Division for the 1978-79 season.

Although only one point was between the teams, the Islanders had 116 points and the Canadiens had 115. Both would gain the first round bye. In third, were the Boston Bruins (100), in fourth, the Philadelphia Flyers (95), in fifth the Atlanta Flames (90) and the last playoff spot was secured by the Buffalo Sabres (88). The last two spots were a close race, though eventually the Toronto Maple Leafs pulled ahead, beating out the Los Angeles Kings, with 81 to 80 points. With the end of the season, came the relegation of the Los Angeles Kings.

In the Stanley Cup Playoff first round, the Boston Bruins faced off against the Buffalo Sabres, while the Philadelphia Flyers played the Atlanta Flames. Both series would end in five games, with the Bruins topping the Sabres, and the Flames upsetting the Flyers. In the second round, the New York Islanders came against the rival Atlanta Flames, while the Montreal Canadiens played the Boston Bruins. The matchups were interesting, because the Canadiens and Bruins were of the Original Six, while the Islanders and Flames were expansion mates. The Islanders-Flames series ended in six games, with the Islanders winning out. The Canadiens-Bruins series was a barn burner that ended in a game seven in Montreal, where the Habs beat the Bruins 6-4. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the New York Islanders embarrassed the Canadiens, who were only able to win one game, game four in Nassau Coliseum, that extended the series to an additional game, where the Islanders won 3-1.

In the Second Division in 1978-1979, another New York team was making headlines. In Madison Square the New York Rangers were the best team in the division by far. Finishing the season at 91 points, the Rangers were six points ahead of the second place Pittsburgh Penguins, as both teams had byes going into the Second Division playoffs.  In third-sixth place (in order) were the Chicago Blackhawks (73), Minnesota North Stars (68), Vancouver Canucks (63) and the Washington Capitals (63).

In the Second Division Playoffs first round, the Chicago Blackhawks played the Washington Capitals, and the Minnesota North Stars played the Vancouver Canucks. The Chicago-Washington series went to seven, impressing many, resulting in a Blackhawks victory. The Minnesota-Vancouver series, though a far less interesting one, would end in a Minnesota sweep. In the second round, the New York Rangers swept the Minnesota North Stars, while the Pittsburgh Penguins battled the Chicago Blackhawks in seven games, ending with a Pittsburgh victory. In the Second Division Title, the New York Rangers swept the Pittsburgh Penguins, earning promotion to the First Division. It was the only season to date, where the titles were won by only New York teams.
