1985 Kellogg Cup Playoffs: Second Round - Twin Cities North
Mounds View Gunners vs Mora Dalecarlians
Shoreview Arena was filled like Sardines as the puck was dropped between Mounds View and Mora. The Dalas were gifted a chance early, getting a turnover in the offensive zone that led to a backdoor goal to put Mora up 6:09 into the game. Mora extended their lead to two in the second period, beating the Gunner netminder five hole on a shot. The Dalas were buzzing, sensing a Super Series birth within reach. Mounds View would be left with a goose egg on the board, leaving Boomer unused and 500+ fans disappointed. The Mora Dalecarlians are heading to the Kellogg Cup Super Series for the first time in team history, shutting out Mounds View 2-0.
#20 Alexandria Norsemen vs Lino Lakes Herons
For the second time in the past three years, Alexandria and Lino Lakes find themselves facing off in the Section Finals. Unfortunately for the Herons, history has a habit of repeating itself. The Norsemen just seem to have Lino Lakes number, completely neutralizing the Heron offense for a full 60 minutes. Alec opened the scoring in the second period and it didn't take them long to make it a two goal game, burying the next shot they took. Lino Lakes had nothing going on offense, mustering only 19 shots for the game, and it led to them getting shut out. Alexandria is heading back to St. Paul for the second time in three years, knocking out Lino Lakes by a score of 2-0.
#11 Maplewood Retrievers vs Stillwater Volunteers
Another Second Round rematch from two years ago, this time between two East Metro rivals. Maplewood came into this game as heavy favorites, but Stillwater has shown they are capable of holding their own with the Goldies during the regular season. The Retrievers may have had a little extra chip on their shoulders wanting to avenge their loss from two years ago. Whether that had an impact or not, the Goldies looked great in this hockey game. Maplewood got the 3,400+ fans into it early, scoring twice in the first period to set the tone of the game. Stillwater got one back in the second, but the Retrievers two goal lead was returned with a powerplay goal in the final minute of the second. The late goal was a dagger for Stillwater who went into the locker room with little to no momentum. Maplewood would put the game out of reach just over 5 minutes into the game, sniping the top corner of the net to give the Goldies a 4-1 lead. That would prove to be the final score, sending Maplewood to their fourth Super Series in team history as they take down their league foes from Stillwater.
Anoka Warriors vs Blaine Spartans
Anoka welcomed a familiar foe, former North Metro member Blaine, to a sold out Anoka Ice Arena. The Spartans are looking to make their third straight Super Series appearance, Anoka is looking to finally get there after years of coming up short. The first period was a bit of a slugfest with both teams taking some runs at one another. The first goal wasn't until late in the second when the Warriors got an odd man rush and were able to sneak it past the Blaine goaltender for a 1-0 lead. Blaine got a powerplay early in the third and were able to make it count, tipping a shot from the point to tie the game at one. Anoka would respond rather soon after, getting another odd man rush that hit the post. They held possession in the offensive zone and after a couple looks were able to pop home a rebound to retake the lead. There were a couple chances for both sides in the third, but the score remained 2-1 Anoka. Blaine was forced to pull their goalie in a last minute effort, but Anoka was able to gain control and dump it in on the open goal to secure the victory. The Anoka Warriors are Super Series bound for the first time in their 21 year history, knocking off Blaine by a 3-1 score.

1985 Kellogg Cup Playoffs: Second Round - Twin Cities South
#1 St. Paul Victorias vs Apple Valley Cardinals
The V's and Cards have one past meeting, back in the Playdowns of the 1975 Super Series. It was all St. Paul in the first meeting, blowing out Apple Valley 5-1, and things were strikingly similar a decade later. The V's came into this game as heavy favorites being the top ranked team in all the MAHL, and they looked like it. St. Paul dominated time of possession, controlling play all game long. A three goal first put the V's in the drivers seat. The Cardinals got one back in the second, but the Victorias put it away with their fourth goal of the game midway through the third. Top ranked St. Paul is heading back to the Super Series for the 4th straight season, their 13th all time, beating Apple Valley by a score of 4-1.
#14 St. Louis Park Louies vs #16 Burnsville Bucks
We had a classic in St. Louis Park as the Louies and Bucks battled tooth and nail for 60 minutes in a back and forth affair. Burnsville opened the scoring late in the first, beating the goalie short side. The Blues evened the score in the second, but the Bucks were able to retake the lead a few minutes later. St. Louis Park clawed back to even the score at two in the third period, but Burnsville managed to jump back in front only 2:15 afterwards. The Louies poured it on in the final minutes, coming so close to forcing overtime, but it was not meant to be as the horn sounded with the scoreboard reading 3-2. Burnsville knocks out the defending champs in the Section Final to advance to their 3rd Super Series in team history.
#25 Minneapolis Millers vs Eagan Oaks
The dream of a third straight Super Series has come to an end for the Eagan Oaks. The Mighty Millers of Minneapolis were not going to be beaten on the night, coming out guns blazing and not letting up. Eagan was held in their own end for most of the game, getting only 11 shots on the Miller goalie for the game. Minneapolis chipped away at the Oak defense and goalie, slowly but surely building a lead. When the dust settled the Millers were up 4-0, sending them to the Super Series for the second year in a row and 10th all time.
Edina Cake Eaters vs Rosemount Wolfhounds
The Hornets Nest was rocking at Braemar Arena as the Cake Eaters and Wolfhounds took the ice to determine who is heading to St. Paul. The first was a bit of a feeling out process for the most part. Edina did get a couple scoring chances, but nothing came of them. First blood was drawn by the Cake Eaters who beat the Rosemount goaltender over his glove to put the Gold Domes ahead. The Hounds responded in quick succession, scoring on their next shot to tie the score at one apiece. Edina was given a 5 on 3 advantage just before the 10 minute mark of the third, and they made the most of it. The Eaters worked it around the zone, opening up the Wolfhound penalty killers. A man was wide open on the back door for the one timer to put Edina up 2-1. The sold out crowd on hand came to life after the go ahead goal and it was all Edina from then on out. Rosemount couldn't keep up with the speed of the Eaters and it began to show, getting trapped in their own end for nearly the entire second half of the third. Edina buried a rebound with a little over 3 to play, essentially putting it away. The Cake Eaters are heading back to the Super Series, knocking out Rosemount 3-1 to make their 15th SS appearance.

1985 Kellogg Cup Playoffs: Second Round - South
#9 Rochester Mustangs vs Eau Claire Rubber Kings
The Rochester Rec Center was filled to capacity as the puck was dropped between the Mustangs and Rubber Kings. Both sides got some grade A chances in the first, each getting a goal. Rochester took a 3-1 lead with a pair of goals in the second, but Eau Claire would come crawling back in the third to even the score at 3-3 and force overtime. Several minutes had passed and there weren't many scoring chances. Finally, Rochester forced an offensive zone turnover that caught the Kings out of position. The Mustangs were able to find a man in the slot for a shot that rippled the twine. The 2,500+ on hand erupted and the goal horn rang, the Rochester Mustangs are heading back to the Super Series. This will be the Mustangs 6th Super Series appearance as they knock out Eau Claire in overtime by a score of 4-3.
#24 Marshall Pheasants vs New Ulm Bavarians
Two South Region bluebloods faced off for the first time ever in Marshall as they decided which team advances to St. Paul. It was a defensive fight with neither goalie seeing much rubber overall. The first goal of the game didn't come until 12:17 into the third period when a Bavarian shot found it's way through a mass of bodies in the slot to get past the Marshall goaltender before he even knew what happened. The go ahead goal gave New Ulm a bit of a jump and they began to pour on the pressure a bit. After making a handful of saves, a rebound was finally smacked past the Pheasant keeper to put the Diamonds up 2-0. With so little time left in the game, Marshall was unable to mount a comeback. New Ulm punches their ticket to their 10th Super Series with a 2-0 shutout of the Pheasants.
#15 Sioux Falls Packers vs Brookings Buffaloes
One of the fiercest rivalries in all of the South, Sioux Falls vs Brookings. These South Dakotans have no love lost for one another, battling for Southwest supremacy as well as multiple playoff meetings. The Packers lead the all-time playoff series 2-1, and coming into this one ranked 15th were expected to make it 3-1. The thing is though that anything can happen in the playoffs. It wasn't a surprise to see an even match with how well the teams know each other, and it was only fitting that the score would be tied 2-2 as the horn sounded for the end of regulation. We went to overtime at the Slaughterhouse, the tension palpable for both teams. It would be a matter of minutes before we had a winner. Brookings gained control in their own end and took it the other way 3 on 2. The puck carrier took it to the right side of the zone then curled up and looked to the slot. There were two Buffaloes in front of the goal, along with one Packer defenseman. One of the Buffs was able to get his stick on the pass, redirecting it on goal. The initial shot was saved, but the rebound was picked up by the other Brookings forward in front. He wasted no time tucking the loose puck around the downed Hog goaltender and into the back of the net. The hometown crowd was left in silence as Brookings players launched themselves over the bench in celebration. For the third time in team history, the Brookings Buffaloes are heading to the Super Series, knocking out their bitter rivals 3-2 in overtime.
Mankato Moose vs Worthington Zephyrs
There must be something about odd years in Mankato, this marks the 5th straight year ending in an odd number that the Moose have reached the Super Series whilst failing to make it during any even year in that span. Mankato was just not going to lose this hockey game, doing all of the little things right and really shutting down the Worthington offense. The Moose scored one in the first and two in the third for a total of 3 while shutting out the Zephyrs on the other side of the ice. Mankato is heading to their 6th Super Series, easily taking care of Worthington 3-0.
