Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1944 Playoffs Semi Finals:

  • Duluth completely dominates Two Harbors, easily sweeping them and advancing to the finals.
  • In a battle of non-Minnesotans, the Lakers came out on top, stunning Thunder Bay in game 5.

Will Duluth continue to roll? Or will the Lakers use their momentum to carry them past the juggernauts from across the bridge?

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1944 Kellogg Cup Finals

Game 1: After 2 scoreless periods, Duluth was able to put one in 7 minutes into the third, and got an empty netter to take the game 2-0.

Game 2: Duluth came out fast, scoring 3 minutes in, but Superior answered in the second. It was tied 1-1 after 2, until Duluth's Michael Thompson got a breakaway and put it five-hole to win it.

Game 3: As the series crossed the bridge, the momentum remained with Duluth who snuck out a 3-2 victory in Wisconsin.

Game 4: Doing everything in their power to not get swept, the Lakers went all out and stayed alive with a 3-1 win.

Game 5: Falling behind 1-0 after the first period, Duluth came out aggressive in the second, scoring twice. They would go on to hold the lead, Duluth is your 1944 Kellogg Cup Champions!

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Prior to the 1944/45 season, the Iron Range Hockey League decided to follow in the footsteps of the Lake Superior League and decided to have a season after 2 years without one.

The Soudan Miners were the only team to have any changes for this season, updating their "S in shield" logo they had had since their founding, the new logo can be seen on their uniforms.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The 1944/45 season concluded and here are the stories.

The Iron Range Hockey League decided to maintain a 24 game season due to having all of the teams returning.

Iron Range Hockey League: Eveleth jumped up to the top of the league, followed closely by Bemidji. Virginia made a big jump after the break, making it back into the playoffs. Ely fell from their top spot, but still clinched a playoff birth. Hibbing just missed out again, as well as Soudan and Chisholm.

Lake Superior Hockey League: Not much changed on the shores of Lake Superior, everyone remained the same as last year except for the Moose and Timberwolves swapping spots at the bottom of the league.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1945 Playoffs First Round:

  • In a major upset, the Black Bears from Ely were able to knock off the top seeded Reds 2 games to 1 and advance.
  • Another upset occurred in the Iron Range when the Virginia Royals stole the series from Bemidji thanks to a third period comeback in game 3.
  • Duluth shows they aren't messing around, not only sweeping the Moose, but completely dominating them.
  • In a close back and forth series, the Giants come out on top of the Lakers and meet their rivals from Duluth in the Semi's.

Semi Finals:

  • Ely's magic is ended by the Royals in a deciding game 5 where Virginia just outplayed them.
  • This was a very physical series, even including a line braul in game 3, but Duluth was able to come out above their heated rivals to the north in 4 games to make another finals appearance.

Will Duluth's dynasty continue? Or will the Royals be David and slay the Goliath on the shores of Superior?

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1945 Kellogg Cup Finals

Game 1: Duluth Came out hard and stunned the Royals jumping to an early lead and not letting up, easily taking game one.

Game 2: Virginia was able to get on the board early thanks to a dumb penalty by Duluth's Andy Payne. Duluth answered soon after and added 2 more in the following periods to take the game 3-1.

Game 3: With the series now on Silver Lake, the Royals were able to sneak out a comeback victory thanks to 2 third period goals by winger Noah Sampson.

Game 4: The game was very defensive all around, with no goals through regulation. It would actually go to double overtime before Sampson became the hero yet again, this time burying a breakaway goal and tying the series at 2 apiece.

Game 5: Duluth, pissed off at losing back to back close games, takes out their anger on the back of Virginia's net, hitting the netting 4 times and taking the series lead back.

Game 6: The locals came out in droves to support their Royals, hoping to force a game 7 back in Duluth. Unfortunately for them, they witnessed a very one sided affair in favor of the visitors. Duluth would go on to win the game 3-0 and win the 1945 Kellogg Cup!

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

6 existing teams made a slight adjustment to their uniforms by dying the leather of their breezers to match the team colors. They got the idea after seeing that teams out east in the NHL were doing this and they thought they'd give it a try themselves. Here are the new looks with the updated pants.

There were 2 major changes that occurred in the off season, both by the St. Paul teams. The Saints made a change to their logo, adjusting their previous one to now have a tail with "Saints" inside. The Jerseys are very simplified from the lined mess before, and they have added a white (cream) away jersey. They also made the decision to change their pant color to red.

Across town, the Victorias updated their classic "Winged V" and added a blue collar to the away jersey, as well as making the pants blue. No need for any major changes to a timeless look.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The Minnesota Amateur Hockey League is proud to announce the two newest members of the league, the Roseau Stars and the Red Wing Chiefs!

Roseau is a small town with less than 2000 people currently living there, but their population is rapidly increasing. Roseau is located just minutes from the Canadian border and has some of the most hockey crazed residents you will find anywhere on earth. Iron Range Hockey League Commissioner Sage Johansson said this "Children learn to skate as soon as they can walk, so it was a no brainer for us to grant the city of Roseau a team" The nickname "Stars" was chosen after the North Star since the city is located so far north. Their logo is a Star with a shape in the top right part loosely forming a "R" for Roseau. The team colors are green and gold.

Red Wing is a fairly large city with about 10,000 residents. It is south of the Twin Cities allowing for more southern expansion in the near future. The nickname "Chiefs" was chosen to honor the cities namesake Chief Red Wing. Their logo is the team name in script, and their colors are red and white.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The 1945/46 season concluded and here are the stories. Each league went back to 24 game seasons, so the Lake Superior and Twin Cities played each other 4 times each while the Iron Range played each other 3 times each.

Iron Range Hockey League: Eveleth remained at the top of the league with a strong year, only having one loss. The expansion team from Roseau took the second spot with an impressive first year. In third place we have the Miners who are looking to make some noise again, in the last playoff spot we have Bemidji who finished just above .500. Just missing the playoffs were the Black Bears, this is their first time missing the playoffs (when the Iron Range had a season) since 1936. Virginia, Hibbing, and Chisholm all had lackluster seasons and finished at the bottom of the league.

Lake Superior Hockey League: In their first year back after the merge, the Hornets remained at the top of the league as if nothing happened. Superior turned some heads this year as they ended the theme of Duluth or Thunder Bay always taking the top 2 spots by just inching out the 2 seed over the Giants. The Voyageurs took the 4 spot and made the playoffs. The bottom three all had a really difficult time in such a strong league, those teams are Two Harbors, Grand Rapids, and Cloquet.

Twin Cities Hockey League: The St. Paul Saints and Victorias took the top two spots in the league followed by the Vulcans. The Millers look to bring back the good ole' days as they clinched a playoff birth despite having a losing record. the Mavericks had the biggest drop off of any team due to the years off from the war, missing the playoffs for the first time since 1921 (when the Twin Cities had a season). The Chiefs struggled in their inaugural season, but the Bruins finished in last place.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1946 Playoffs Knockout Round:

  • Soudan is able to strike early and hold of the Ox to move on.
  • In the wildcard bracket, the Vulcans pull of the upset over the Giants, in Thunder Bay, to advance.
  • The Victorias knock off the Millers in a tough fought battle.
  • Superior takes care of Le Bleus and goes on to meet the Hornets in the second round.

Second Round:

  • Eveleth completely outplays the Miners, sweeping them.
  • In their first playoff appearance, the Stars were upset by the Vulcans who look to be picking up some momentum.
  • The captain of the Victorias, Lance Ogden, has a strange tradition of bringing a "lucky" milk jug that he brings to every game. After his Victorias took game 1 of the series, a couple of Saints players were able to snag the jug from the Victorias locker room. The Saints went on to win the next game, forcing a deciding game 3. The Saints made an offer to the Victorias, whoever win the series keeps the milk jug. The Saints went out and won in overtime to take the series and thus kept the jug, they proceeded to rub it in the faces of the Victorias by parading it around the ice after the game, Ogden and his teammates were held back to prevent a brawl and the first rivalry trophy in MAHL history was formed.
  • In another rivalry series, the Hornets just squeezed past the Lakers to advance.

Semi Finals:

  • The Vulcans continued to upset the league as the knocked off the top seeded Reds in Eveleth to advance to the finals.
  • Riding the momentum from defeating their rivals and now owning the Milk Jug, the Saints took care of the Hornets in 4 games to advance and meet another old rival in the finals.

Will the Vulcans upset streak continue Or will the Saints claim their first Kellogg Cup?
