Re: NFL-PCFL Simulation

1988 NFL Season

Eastern Conference
After their whirlwind Title winning season in 1987, the Indianapolis Colts were shocked when their quarterback, Jack Trudeau, the Title game MVP, defected to the United States Football League's Denver Gold. The USFL, a spring football format competing with the NFL and PCFL for players, would draw several prominent players over the years from the elder circuits. In the Atlantic Division, the league saw it's tightest divisional race of the season, in that all teams had a chance to win the title with several weeks left. The defending champion Colts, with Chris Chandler at the helm, would finish 7-7, ahead of the Bay State Patriots with the same record. In third were the 6-8 Miami Dolphins, and in fourth the 5-9 Washington Redskins. With the divisional title, the 7-7 Colts would travel on the road to Philadelphia for the Eastern Conference Final.

In the North, there was another close race, lacking the mediocrity of the Atlantic Division's race. The Philadelphia Eagles, with New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, fought tooth and nail to most certainly host the Eastern Conference Final. Close to the half way point in the season, the three were neck and neck. Eventually the Eagles would pull ahead and in the last two weeks clinched the division title. In second were the Giants at 9-5, and in third the Cleveland Browns, who had so infamously lost the 1988 Eastern Conference Final to the Indianapolis Colts. In last, were the once mighty Pittsburgh Steelers, at 4-10, the second worst team in the NFL.

In the Eastern Conference Final, the Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Indianapolis Colts. On paper, the Eagles were the clear favorite. They had the better record, and had played in a harder division than their opponents, so some saw them as the anointed team. However those with a close eye saw better. In one of the Colts seven regular season wins, was a road trip to Philadelphia, where the Colts won 27-21. A close game, but one that the Eagles should've won. As such, when the Colts took the field, it was surprising to see them utterly dominate the home town fans. All game thunderous boos filled the stadium, as the Eagles failed to score a single touchdown all game. In the end, the Indianapolis Colts won 23-3, and won the right to play in the 1988 NFL Title.

Western Conference
In the Central Division, the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears battled for supremacy all season. Both had been running the Central for several years, and both came to play for the division title. They would split the regular season series, both home wins. The tiebreaker would be points scored, and the Minnesota Vikings would win the division title, at 11-3, the same record as the second place Chicago Bears. In third, the Green Bay Packers, finished with a winning record, at 8-6, while the last place Detroit Lions would finish 2-12. With the division title, the Minnesota Vikings won the right to host the Western Conference Final.

In the South division, the Houston Oilers won the division title with a 9-5 record. Far behind were the tied second and third place New Orleans Saints and Dallas Texans at 6-8. In last place were the 2-12 Atlanta Falcons. The major story of the season was the sudden rise of Houston quarterback, Warren Moon. Moon, an African-American quarterback, had first played professionally for the Canadian football team, the Edmonton Eskimos. After some success he had been signed by the Oilers, and had been a part of a rebuild in Houston. With his winning season, the Houston Oilers ushered in a golden era for Houston Oiler football. With the division title, the Oilers would travel to the Hubert H. Humphrey Dome in Minnesota for the Western Conference Final.

In the 1988 Western Conference Final, the Minnesota Vikings hosted the Houston Oilers. The Oiler offense under Moon was stumbling against the Viking defense. The offense's were stunted on both sides, and the Vikings took an early lead of 13-7 going into the second half. Going into the next half, the Oilers would score a second touchdown, and missed a two point conversion. With this small lead, the Vikings would go down the field on two separate occasions and score field goals. With the final score, 19-13, the Minnesota Vikings won the right to host the NFL Title.

1988 NFL Title
In the 1988 NFL Title, the Minnesota Vikings, led by quarterback Wade Wilson, faced off against Indianapolis's Chris Chandler. At 7-7, the Indianapolis Colts were looking to win a second straight NFL Title, and were looking to topple the home town Vikings. The game, played in a dome, was held during a blizzard that left the building frosty on the inside. Both offenses found no purchase and the game was all about the two kickers. The game was very tit for tat, with a field goal by each team. At the end, the Minnesota Vikings won the NFL Title, 12-9

1988 PCFL Season
The 1988 PCFL season marked the first year that Phoenix, Arizona had a franchise in the league. The former Saint Louis Cardinals, had left Saint Louis following their last home game in the 1987 Playoff. The team was basically the same as the 1987 team, with Neil Lomax leading the way. In the beginning they started 1-2, but would go on a winning streak, finishing 9-3 and in second place, clinching the right to host the 1988 Playoff. In first were the 9-3 San Francisco 49ers, who had split the regular season with Phoenix but won on tiebreakers, winning the regular season title, and the right to host the 1988 Pacific Bowl. In third were the 8-4 San Diego Chargers, who fought with Arizona much of the year to win second place, but eventually fell behind. The rest of the league had little of note. The Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Raiders Seattle Seahawks had poor seasons, with the first three finishing 4-8, and the Seahawks posting a 3-9 record.

In the 1988 PCFL Playoff, the Phoenix Cardinals hosted the San Diego Chargers. In the 1960's the Saint Louis Cardinals and San Diego Chargers were huge rivals, with one of the two winning from 1960 to 1966. The current teams had marked animosity between them as well, with the first game finishing 25-24 in San Diego's favor. In the week 15 matchup, the last game of the regular season, the Chargers lost to the Cardinals in Phoenix 30-20. With the last game played, the two were set to play in a rematch the next week in the 1988 Playoff. With the game on the line both teams fought hard to score. The home crowd was a sellout, a rarity even in their success. The problem was that they were waiting for the city of Phoenix to build a new stadium, and were playing in Tempe in the meantime. As such, the early games, which begin in August, were to hot for the fans to sit out in. Still though, the Cardinals were the home team and steadily won the game, finishing 19-17, winning the right to a rematch of the 1987 Playoff, this time in San Francisco. In the 1988 Pacific Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Phoenix Cardinals. The Cardinals tried their best, but found no success, losing poorly to the San Francisco 49ers, 23-6.

Re: NFL-PCFL Simulation

1989 NFL Season

Eastern Conference
In the Atlantic Division of 1989, the Washington Redskins were the premier team, and would win every game against their divisional rivals during the 1989 campaign. The three games they lost were to the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Texans and Houston Oilers. In second came the 6-8 Miami Dolphins, with Dan Marino once again lighting up scoreboards, while still losing most of his starts. In third one game behind Miami, were the 5-9 Indianapolis Colts, and the in last were the 3-11 Bay State Patriots. With the division title, the Washington Redskins won the right to the Eastern Conference Final.

In the North Divison, the Cleveland Browns, who had been rising in the power rankings for several years, were still haunted by their 1987 Eastern Conference Final loss to the eventual champion Indianapolis Colts. In 1988, they had gone 9-5, but had finished in the third place, out of the playoffs. For the 1989 season, everything seemed to click. Although in a tight race for the division title, they would post a 9-5 record. Just behind them were the third and fourth place New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, who both finished 8-6. In last were the 6-8 Pittsburgh Steelers. With the final game played, the Cleveland Browns won the right to travel to Washington for the Eastern Conference Final.

In the 1989 Eastern Conference Final, the 11-3 Washington Redskins hosted the 9-5 Cleveland Browns. In the regular season, the Redskins had traveled to Cleveland, where the Browns had beat them badly, though the score was 24-13. This game would not be so one sided. The Redskins under Mark Rypien seemed to be firing on all cylinders. By the final two minute warning, the score was Washington, 20, Cleveland, 14. With Bernie Kosar at the helm, the Browns drove down the field and scored with 30 seconds left on the clock, to make the score, 21-20. With thirty seconds left, the Redskins got the ball back, and drove down the field to just past the 50 yard line, and made a daring field goal kick that ended at wide right. As the time expired the Cleveland faithful cheered at the thought of a Browns team in a title since 1964, or a League title since 1955.

Western Conference
In the Central Division, the Minnesota Viking lead the division all season, and would finish 10-4. In second were the 7-7 Detroit Lions had lost both games to the Vikings, though they did put up a fight in one. In third, the Green Bay Packers finished at 6-8, just behind the Lions, and in last, the once proud Chicago Bears finished 3-11. With the divisional title, the Minnesota Vikings won the right to travel to New Orleans for the Western Conference Final.

In the South, the division was defined by the battle between the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Oilers. Though the Oilers were on the rise, the Saints had been competing for the divisional title since 1985, and had been to several Western Conference Finals. The Oilers, whose last title was in 1961, were looking to win the division. In the regular season however the Saints won both games against the Oilers, and would finish 11-3, while the Oilers finished 9-5. In third were the 7-7 Dallas Texans and in last the 3-11 Atlanta Falcons. With the divisional title, the Saints won the right to host the Western Conference Final.

In the 1989 Western Conference Final, the New Orleans Saints hosted the Minnesota Vikings. Though the Vikings were the defending NFL champions, the Saints were at home and had an admirable squad of players. In the regular season, the Vikings had hosted the Saints, but had been soundly defeated by the Saints, 27-9. In the rematch, the location was flipped, and as a result, so were the winners. In the game, the Vikings blew past the Saints and never looked back. The game was a one sided affair, finishing with a Viking victory, 27-3.

1989 NFL Title
In the 1989 NFL Title, the Minnesota Vikings hosted the Cleveland Browns. The 10-4 Vikings had won only one more game than the 9-5 Browns, and one of their wins had been against the Browns, winning in Cleveland, 35-14. As such, the defending champion and hometown Vikings were considered a shoe in for NFL champion. The Browns started the game off slow, while the Vikings scored a touchdown on their first long drive. Another field goal in the second quarter put Minnesota in the lead, 10-0. In the third quarter, with the game slipping away, the Browns marched down the field methodically and scored a touchdown, which they added to with a successful two point conversion, to make the score, 10-8. In the fourth quarter, the Browns offense erupted, and would score three easy touchdowns, while the Vikings stalled in every sense of the word. The game would end with the Cleveland Browns champions, winners of a 29-10 game. This title was Cleveland's fourth, and first since 1955.

1989 PCFL Season
The 1989 PCFL season was marked by the San Francisco 49ers utter dominance. In the regular season, the 49ers went 10-2, starting the season 1-1, and only losing one more game the whole season. One of the losses was a close home affair with the Phoenix Cardinals, and the other was at home against the San Diego Chargers. In second, the Denver Broncos seemed to be resurrected, along with John Elway's career. The Broncos would post a 8-4 record, one game ahead of the third place Los Angeles Raiders, who were 7-5. In fourth place, the Los Angeles Rams finished 6-6, as did the fifth place San Diego Chargers. In sixth were the 4-8 Phoenix Cardinals, whose victory against the 49ers had been but one of few. And in last, the Seattle Seahawks finished 1-11, whose only win was a week 4 win against the Cardinals.

In the 1989 PCFL Playoff, the Denver Broncos hosted the Los Angeles Raiders in a chilly and windy day at Mile High Stadium. Both offenses were stifled, and going into the two minute warning of the fourth quarter, the score was a 13-13 tie. With less than two minutes left, the Denver Broncos, with Elway at the helm, went on a quick drive to the end zone, ending the game, 16-13 in favor of the hometown Broncos. In the 1989 Pacific Bowl, the 49ers were the favorite to win, as this was their sixth straight Pacific Bowl appearance, and had won the two previous titles to boot. A brisk day in San Francisco would see a fourth quarter drive by the Broncos, but in this case it was one of futility. San Francisco, while not performing at full strength, still won the game, 19-7, and made it a three peat of Pacific Bowl's.

Re: NFL-PCFL Simulation

1990 NFL Season

Eastern Conference
In the Atlantic Division, in 1990, the Miami Dolphins finally snapped out of their dreadful streak. They battled with the Washington Redskins all year to win a division title, and would pull out a 11-3 record, ahead of the Redskins 9-5. In third place, the Indianapolis Colts finished 4-10, and in last, the Bay State Patriots finished 2-12. The Patriots would rank the lowest in the league in 1990, just behind on tiebreakers with the defending champion Cleveland Browns. With their 11-3 record, the Dolphins won the right to contend for an Eastern Conference Final, their first since 1983, and would go on to travel to Philadelphia.

In the North Division, the Philadelphia Eagles were the first amongst equals, with three out of four teams posted winning seasons. In first, the Eagles finished 11-3, in second, the Pittsburgh Steelers posted a 9-5 record, and in third, the New York Giants went 8-6. In last, the Cleveland Browns, went from first to (essentially) worst, and posted a 2-12 record. With the division title, and a victory in the regular season against the Dolphins (20-17), the Philadelphia Eagles won the right to host the 1990 Eastern Conference Final.

In the 1990 Eastern Conference Final, the Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Miami Dolphins. Leading the much lauded Philadelphia offense, was the comparable Randall Cunningham, a highly mobile quarterback, and his opposite number was the 1983 NFL Title MVP winner, Dan Marino. The game was played on a wet and cold day in Philadelphia, and the Dolphins seemed stunted in the bad weather. The Eagles showed no such troubles, and would win the game at home, 21-10. With this victory, the NFL Title was set to be played in Philadelphia, for the first time since 1965.

Western Conference
In the Central Division in 1990, the Minnesota Vikings continued their long reign on top of the division, though a resurgent Bears team troubled them for much of the season. The Vikings would finish 8-6, to Chicago's 7-6-1, (their tie was against the Detroit Lions, and the score was 27-27 in Soldier Field). In third place, the Green Bay Packers finished just ahead of the fourth place Detroit Lions, with the Packers finishing 5-9, to Detroit's 4-9-1. With the divisional title, the Vikings won the right to compete in Houston for anther NFL Title.

In the South Division, the Houston Oilers battled with the Atlanta Falcons all season long. In week three, the Oilers hosted an beat the Falcons 13-12, and in week 14, they beat the Falcons in Atlanta, 27-21. Even so, the two would finish neck and neck. As such the 9-5 Oilers won the division title, and the Atlanta Falcons finished in second, adding to a playoff drought that had began with a 1984 NFL Title loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In third place, the Dallas Texans finished 7-7, and in fourth place, the New Orleans Saints posted a 6-8 record. With the division title, the Houston Oilers won the right to host the 1990 Western Conference Final at the Astrodome.

In the 1990 Western Conference Final, the Houston Oilers hosted the Minnesota Vikings. It was not a close game by any means, and little need be said of the game itself. In the end the Houston Oilers, with a howling rebirth of the Luv Ya Blue Oilers, won the game 20-0. The Vikings took every misstep imaginable and floundered on live television. With the victory, the Houston Oilers won the right to travel to Philadelphia for the 1990 NFL Title.

1990 NFL Title
The 1990 NFL Title is important to note as it was a replay of the highly controversial, 1977 NFL Title, where the Eagles beat the Oilers in Houston, 23-20. It was also notable for the fact that both Warren Moon and Randall Cunningham, the two starting quarterbacks, were both African American, at that time an oddity in the NFL. When the offense's got moving it was a spectacle, but neither team was very good in the Red Zone, with the only Red Zone touchdown being a first quarter scramble by Cunningham to leave the score 7-3. By half time it was 17-10 in Philadelphia's favor. In the third quarter the Oilers went down the field, but were forced to take a field goal. With the score 17-13. With the fourth quarter winding down the Oilers moved down the field and scored a late touchdown to leave the score 20-17, with 35 seconds left. Many saw this as the second title won already, but the Eagles were able to put together a pair of receptions and kick a field goal to tie the game with 3 seconds left. With overtime, the Eagles won the cow flip and brought the ball to just outside the field goal range, when they made a running play that ended with a fumble that was recovered by the Oilers. With the first overtime period almost exhausted, the Oilers settled for a field goal and won their franchise's second title, the first being the miracle 1961 team. It was also the beginning of a soon to be dynasty.

1990 PCFL Season
In the 1990 PCFL season, the two most dominant teams were the San Diego Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers. Both would finish 10-2, with the Chargers ahead on tiebreakers. As both won one game, the Chargers won on points scored. In week 7, the Chargers beat the 49ers 11-7, while in week 12, the 49ers beat the Chargers 27-24, this time in San Diego. In third place, the Los Angeles Rams went 9-3, securing the third seed in the playoffs. In fourth Seattle Seahawks finished 5-7, one game ahead of the fifth place Phoenix Cardinals. In sixth, the Los Angeles Raiders went 3-9, and in last the Denver Broncos, who had lost the previous Pacific Bowl, posted a 1-11 record.

In the 1990 PCFL Playoff, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Los Angeles Rams. The game would be exceedingly close. As the game progressed, the Rams and 49ers seemed on an even keel. The 49ers, who were attempting to win their fourth straight Pacific Bowl, were tied with the Rams after 3 quarters of play, 21-21. With a whole fourth quarter left, the 49ers scored a field goal, to make the score 24-21. At the end of the game, the 49ers won the right to appear in their sixth straight title appearance. In the 1990 Pacific Bowl, the Chargers hosted the 49ers and played a shockingly close game. The final score would be the same as that of the NFL Title, with the Chargers, at home, winning the game 23-20. Billy Joe Tolliver, the Chargers QB, won the Pacific Bowl MVP, though he would never return to a league title.

Re: NFL-PCFL Simulation

1991 NFL Season

Eastern Conference
In the Atlantic Division in 1991, the Washington Redskins were the dominant team. At 11-3, they were also the number one seed going into the postseason and a lock for hosting the Eastern Conference Final. Far behind in second, were the 6-8 Miami Dolphins, who played an underwhelming season in the division. The third and fourth teams were even worse, as both the third place Bay State Patriots, and the fourth place Indianapolis Colts finished 2-12, the worst teams in the league that year.

In the North Division, the race was slightly closer. With Randall Cunningham injured in the preseason, Jim McMahon took the reigns and won the division title, with a 10-3-1 record. In second were the New York Giants, who at 7-7, had decided to end the Hostetler experiment and would return to Phil Simms for the 1992 season. In third, also at 7-7, were the Pittsburgh Steelers, and in fourth, the 6-8 Cleveland Browns. With the division title, the Philadelphia Eagles, would travel to Washington's RFK Stadium for the 1991 Eastern Conference Final.

The 1991 Eastern Conference was played on a cold day in Washington DC. The Washington Redskins were hosting the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Redskins were looking for their first Eastern Conference Title since 1986, where they had been humiliated by the Chicago Bears. The quarterback for that team had also been Jim McMahon, a fact the Redskins faithful knew to well. Taking the field for their first drive, the Eagles were buffeted as the stadium shook with boos. With this start, some could have seen a route, but this was not so. The game was close throughout. The scoring was modest, but the game was exciting throughout. In the end, the Philadelphia Eagles kicked a last minute field goal and won the game, 20-19. With the win, the Philadelphia Eagles won the right to host the 1991 NFL Title.

Western Conference
In the Central Division, there was as close a division race as is possible. None of the teams were very good, though Detroit's Barry Sanders was turning heads at the time, and it showed in the standings. By the end of the season, it came down to the last week, with the 7-6 Green Bay Packers visited the 10-3 Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles had been efficient on offense all year, but the Packers defense stymied the offense and in the end, the teams would tie 3-3. With this tie, the Packers finished 7-6-1 and won the division title. In second and third, the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings posted 7-7 records while the fourth place Chicago Bears finished 6-8. With the division title, the Green Bay Packers would travel to Houston to play for an NFL Title.

In the South Division, the defending champion Houston Oilers were expected to win the division, and while they did, it wasn't that easy a road. The New Orleans Saints also fought for the title and would end with the Oilers 10-4, and the Saints at 8-6. Just behind the Saints, were the third place Atlanta Falcons, and the fourth place Dallas Texans, finished at 7-7. With the division title, the Houston Oilers won the right to host the Western Conference Final.

In the 1991 Western Conference Final, the defending champion Houston Oilers hosted the Green Bay Packers. The Packers, at 7-6-1, were hardly deemed worthy of playing in the final, and many saw the Oilers as heavy favorites. The Packers disagreed. All game, the scrappy Packers kept themselves in the game. Going into the two minute warning the game was tied, 16-16. The Oilers had the ball and were close to the end zone. The Oilers, on third down and seven, looked for a quick passto advance the ball, which resulted in a vicious sack of Warren Moon. While he was sacked, he fumbled and the Packers recovered. Driving down the field, the Packers made the score 19-16, with only half a minute left. Several Hail Mary passes from Moon failed and the Green Bay Packers were Western Conference champions. As a result, they would be in their first NFL Title appearance since 1983.

1991 NFL Title
The 1991 NFL Title, was a replay of the last week of play, and saw the Philadelphia Eagles host the Green Bay Packers. The teams were not seen as evenly matched and the Eagles were expected to win. While this would occur, it should be noted that no touchdowns were scored all game and each team are stymied from the start. The Eagles took a 6-0 lead at the half, and led 9-0 going into the fourth quarter. At the two minute warning, the Eagles led 12-0. In the last thirty seconds of play the Packers scored a field goal, but the game was over the Philadelphia Eagles were NFL champions.

1991 PCFL Season
In the 1991 season, the San Francisco 49ers finished the year 9-3 and firmly in first. With this the 49ers won admittance to their eight straight Pacific Bowl. In second, Seattle Seahawks went 7-5, and in third were the 6-6 Los Angele Raiders, who were ahead of the fourth place San Diego Chargers, and fifth place Denver Broncos, who were also 6-6. In sixth, was the 5-7 Phoenix Cardinals, who finished respectably for a sixth place team. And in last, in seventh, the Los Angeles Rams finished 4-8.

In the 1991 PCFL Playoff, the Seattle Seahawks hosted the Los Angeles Raiders. Although the Seahawks had made their playoff debut in 1986, 1991 was the first playoff game played in Seattle, and the fans showed up in droves to see the once mighty Raiders in their home field. The Raiders would end up running roughshod over the Seahawks and would win 19-0. With this victory, the Los Angeles Raiders, travelled north to San Francisco for the 1991 Pacific Bowl. With the title commenced, the 49ers proceeded to beat the Raiders senseless. While the Raiders would score, it was not enough, and the 49ers won the Pacific Bowl, 34-17.
