Soccer in Avalon
Soccer was first played in Avalon in its current form in 1894, between amateur clubs in the city. The first game was played in the Norskarter District between Bergen Avalon and the Kings Lions, both Norwegian teams. Only attended by just over 100 people, the game would steadily grow in Avalon with the Avalon Athletic Club playing in the old American Soccer League. The team would fold in 1944, and professional soccer would be absent from the city until the advent of the North American Soccer League.
In 1975, the Avalon Dragons were founded and soon came to play at football stadium in Multiplex, where they would draw just under 24,000 a game for their first two years. This made the crowds at games look tiny, largely because the stadium seated 67,000. When Pele came to town, the crowds were markedly bigger, and the team did well enough that they would remain in the NASL until it folded.
With the 1994 World Cup in the United State, the MLS was founded first playing in 1996. Originally Avalon was not on its list of markets, but with the poor state of finances by the Tampa Bay Mutiny, an Avalon ownership bought the team and relocated them to Avalon, reviving the Avalon Dragons name, which remained popular with the people of the city.
From 2002 until 2014, the Dragons called the Multiplex home. However, they had trouble selling out the lower bowl and seemed to sink low in support. In 2012, the team decided to change this with a new stadium. At first Downtown Avalon was the preferred location, due to the success of RadTec Arena in revitalizing the Braves franchise, but no plot of land could be secured. A small stadium across the parking lot from the Multiplex was also considered, but it was quickly shot down.
Finally they settled on a bold new project, tearing down Varsity Stadium in North Caliburn, home to the UNJ-A Patriots football team. First built in the 1930's, the stadium had been renovated twice, but was in dire need of a new facility. With the Avalon Dragons looking for a facility, talks were held, and soon a plan was reached. With the cost of the stadium being split between UNJ-A and the Dragons. Both had to get help to fund the project, but soon it was 2015, and the new stadium, which seated 35,000 for football and 24,000 for soccer, was opened to much local fanfare. With the new stadium, came a rebranding to Avalon Athletic, in honor of the old team.

I'd be interested.
