Re: MAHL Redux

1912 North Playoffs

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Thief River Falls Hockey Club
Fans packed into the Eveleth indoor rink, smooshed together like sardines to watch their Mighty Reds take on Thief River Falls. Eveleth got on the board early, beating the goalie with a slap shot. The Reds dominated the first, scoring three more while keeping Thief River to just 2 shots on goal for the period. Thief regrouped between periods and looked much better in the second, scoring a pair but allowing a pair as well to send us to the third with the score 6-2 in favor of Eveleth. A breakaway goal extended the Reds lead to five midway through the third. Thief River netted one more but it would be much too little, much too late. One more Eveleth put a bow on it with the Reds up 8-3. The Eveleth Hockey Club wins comfortably and returns to the Super Series for the 5th time in 6 years.

Blackduck Hockey Club vs Two Harbors Hockey Club
The city of Blackduck was buzzing as their hockey team got ready to play their first ever postseason contest in front of what felt like half the town. The visitors from Two Harbors got on the board first but Blackduck was quick to respond. The two went back and forth for the rest of regulation with neither team leading by more than one at any point in the match. After 60 minutes of play the scoreboard read 4-4, sending us to overtime with a ticket to St. Paul on the line. More than 10 minutes passed and there was very little offense from either team with both sides focussed on protecting their own end. Finally, 13:25 into the extra frame, we had a winner. Two Harbors held possession in the offensive zone, working the puck around in a game of keep away. A shot was taken near the sidewall, fired into a mass of bodies in front of the Blackduck net. The puck ricocheted off a couple sticks, skates, and shins in front, pinballing around before finding its way past the Blackduck goaltender and into the back of the net. The hometown crowd was silent while the Two Harbors players celebrated in jubilation on the ice. The pack of Timberwolves are heading back to the Super Series with a 5-4 overtime victory over Blackduck.

Alexandria Hockey Club vs East Grand Forks Hockey Club
The puck was dropped and we were underway from Alexandria City Rink to watch the West Central champs take on the Red River champs. Things got off to a rocky start for the home team with EGF scoring on their first shot of the game and again just a couple minutes later to take an early 2-0 lead. Alek got one back near the end of the first to make it 2-1 heading into the period break. The floodgates opened in the second with Alexandria unloading an offensive onslaught on the East Grand goaltender. 24 shots and 5 goals later, the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the second. One more goal in the third put the nail in the coffin for EGF, allowing 7 unanswered and seeing their season come to an end. Alexandria advances to the Kellogg Cup Super Series for the first time in club history, knocking out East Grand Forks by a final score of 7-2.

Brainerd Hockey Club vs International Falls Hockey Club
Nearly 700 fans packed the bleachers and stood around the rink at Gregory Park to watch the Brainerd Hockey Club take on the Northland League champions from International Falls. The first period was a feeling out process with the only goal of the frame coming with 11 seconds left to give the Lumberjacks a lead heading into the break. International Falls tied it up a few minutes into the second but a pair of bang-bang Brainerd goals put the Jacks back in front in the blink of an eye. I-Falls kept pace with Brainerd throughout, even outshooting the Lumberjacks in the 2nd and 3rd, but they just couldn’t solve the red hot Brainerd netminder who stood on his head and made a couple miraculous saves that brought the hometown crowd to their feet. Brainerd scored two more in the third while International Falls was stonewalled, sending the Lumberjacks to the Super Series for the third time with a 5-1 victory.

Re: MAHL Redux

1912 South Playoffs

St. Paul Athletic Club vs Austin Hockey Club
The Hipp was rocking as the Saints came marching out to take on the champions of the Corn Belt Hockey Association, Austin. As expected, the first period belonged to the St. Paul Athletic Club who came out fast and hard, controlling possession and holding Austin to just one shot on goal for the period while scoring a pair of goals to lead 2-0 after one. The Meatpackers from Austin buried one early in the second and it gave them a boost and a glimmer of hope. That hope was promptly squashed by the Saints who scored two more to extend their lead to three, but Austin was showing improvement the longer the game went on. Austin netted their second goal of the game in the waning moments of the period to make it 4-2 heading into the third. St. Paul put it away in the third after beating the Austin goalie thrice while only allowing one. The St. Paul Athletic Club is heading back to the Super Series for the third time in club history, defeating Austin by a final score of 7-3.

Anoka Hockey Club vs La Crosse Hockey Club
It was a cold afternoon in Anoka as the La Cross Hockey Club made the trek north to take on the NMHA champs at the Anoka County Fairgrounds. Anoka got on the board first but La Crosse tied it up a few minutes later. A breakaway goal put the visitors ahead 2-1 as we went to the first intermission. Anoka came out flying in the third, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the frame. La Crosse would get one back midway through the period and that would be it for the second with Anoka up 5-2 after two. The third period was noticeably more physical with Anoka playing staunch defense. Both teams would find the back of the net, but just once each. The ref blew his whistle after 60 minutes of play to send Anoka to the Super Series for the first time ever as they beat La Crosse 6-3.

Willmar Hockey Club vs Edina Athletic Club
The Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds played host to the wildest game of the 1912 Regional Playoffs as hometown Willmar took visiting Edina to overtime in a 15 goal thriller. It was about as even a contest as you can get with neither team leading by more than one at any point. Willmar led 2-1 after one and 5-4 after two, but Edina stuck right with them and forced overtime with the score tied 7-7 after regulation. The puck was dropped for overtime and we had a winner before a minute had even elapsed. The Athletics dumped the puck into the Willmar zone and won the race to the loose puck down low. It was centered in front of the net where the Edina winger was ready and waiting for the one timer. The initial shot was stopped, but the rebound was promptly smacked home to send Edina to the Super Series. The Edina Athletic Club pulled off the upset, taking down the #2 ranked team in the South by a score of 7-6.

Mill City Hockey Club vs Stillwater Hockey Club
Nicollet Park was hopping as thousands of spectators filled the bleachers to watch Mill City take on Stillwater for a spot in the Super Series. The first period was a low scoring, but brutal, battle. There were more hits than shots and both teams were taking cheap shots in retaliation back and forth. The only goal came late with Mill City slapping at a loose puck in front of the Stillwater goal over and over until it finally found its way across the goal line. Stillwater leveled it up in the second, even taking a lead for a few minutes before Mill City tied it at two midway through the game. Mill City would retake the lead before the end of the period with a pair of goals to make it 4-2 after two. Stillwater pulled back to within one 1:57 into the third but another pair of goals gave Mill City a commanding 6-3 lead. To Stillwater’s credit, they never gave up, pressing for goals until the final whistle and even getting a consolation goal late to make it 6-4. That would be all they could muster though with the Mighty Millers making their fourth Super Series appearance after a two year hiatus.

Re: MAHL Redux

1912 Super Series Bracket
It was a brisk 13 degrees outside on the morning of March 2nd as a committee of media from around the state met in St. Paul to decide the seeding of the 1912 Kellogg Cup Super Series.

The one seed went to the defending champs from Eveleth who will be facing off with West Metro champions Edina Athletic in the first game of this year's Super Series. There was almost nothing separating these two so it’s only fitting that the 4 and 5 seeds would go to Alexandria and Brainerd. The St. Paul Athletic Club earned the 2 seed as TCHA champs with the Twin Cities runners-up, Mill City, taking the 3 seed. Anoka will take on the Saints as the 7th ranked club while Two Harbors is paired with the Millers as the 6 seed.

Who do you want? Who do you think will win? Let me know, comments are always appreciated!

Re: MAHL Redux

1912 Kellogg Cup Quarterfinals

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Edina Athletic Club
The 1912 Kellogg Cup Super Series kicked off with a bang with the top ranked Eveleth Hockey Club putting a whooping on the Edina Athletics. It was never even a contest with the Mighty Reds taking a commanding 5-0 lead into the first intermission. Edina would manage to net one in both the second and third, but Eveleth continued to pour it on. By the time the referee blew his final whistle the scoreboard read 11-2 in favor of Eveleth, sending the Reds back to the semifinals for the 5th time in 6 years and bringing an end to Edina’s season.

Alexandria Hockey Club vs Brainerd Hockey Club
The second afternoon game was a much better match with the West Central and Central Lakes champions facing off as the 4 & 5 seeds. Brainerd got the scoring started 7 minutes in, followed by a couple Alexandria goals that made it 2-1 heading into the second. Alek extended their lead in the second, leading by as much as four at one point before Brainerd pulled it back to send us to the third with Alexandria up 6-3. With their backs against the wall, the Lumberjacks came out flying. Alexandria was caught on their heels, pinned in their own zone for what felt like half the period while Brainerd chipped away at their lead. They pulled within two, then one, before Alexandria finally got a chance of their own and finally got back on the scoreboard to slow the bleeding. A Brainerd shot took a fortuitous bounce to make it a one goal game with just over 5 minutes to play. The Jacks were laying it all on the line, pushing for the late equalizer, but it left them exposed. A shot was blocked leading to a breakaway for Alexandria. He faked the shot before pulling the puck to his forehand and tucking it around the floundering goaltender to give his team an insurance goal. That would be all she wrote with Brainerd unable to get anything going after going back down two. Alexandria is moving on, defeating Brainerd by a score of 8-6.

St. Paul Athletic Club vs Anoka Hockey Club
The St. Paul Hippodrome was filled to capacity as the Saints took to their home ice to take on the North Metro champs from Anoka. There was a sizable contingency of Anoka fans who made the short trip south to watch their team play in their first Super Series. The first period was pretty slow with the only goal going to the Saints. Anoka tied it up in the second, but the floodgates opened soon after with St. Paul unloading 4 goals in a 9 minute span to take a commanding 5-1 lead into the third. Up by four, the Saints were content to run out the clock and focus on defense, getting just 6 shots on goal in the third. Anoka gave it their all, doing everything they could to try and claw their way back into the game, but they could only muster one more. The St. Paul Athletic Club advances to the Semifinals, knocking out Anoka by a score of 5-2.

Mill City Hockey Club vs Two Harbors Hockey Club
The final game of the opening day of the Super Series was arguably the best of the bunch with Mill City and Two Harbors going the distance and then some. This was an incredibly even contest with neither team leading by more than one at any point in the game. Mill City were up 1-0 after one but Two Harbors bounced back in the second and led 3-2 after 40 minutes of play. The Millers scored two in quick succession to regain the lead, but the Timberwolves leveled it up once again just a few minutes later. We were all tied up at four when the ref blew his whistle to signal the end of regulation, treating the 6,000 some fans in attendance to some free hockey. Hot off their overtime win over Blackduck in the North Region Playoffs Two Harbors came out confident and very nearly put it away, ringing a shot off the post a couple minutes in. Mill City got an opportunity off a pickpocket in the offensive zone. A Two Harbors defenseman had the puck stripped from him by a Miller who dumped it off to his teammate who was steaming towards the net. He caught the pass and faked a shot, getting the goalie to drop before ripping a shot into the open net to clinch the win for Mill City. Two Harbors sees their season come to end in heartbreaking fashion as the Mill City Hockey Club advances to the Semifinals with a 5-4 win in overtime.

Re: MAHL Redux

I'm going with Mill City, simply because they're not wearing red like the rest of the teams.

Re: MAHL Redux

1912 Kellogg Cup Semifinals

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Alexandria Hockey Club
The crowd filled in and we were nearly underway from St. Paul as Eveleth prepared to take on West Central Hockey League champions, Alexandria. The referee dropped the puck to kick off the 1912 Kellogg Cup Semifinals and the Reds wasted no time. Eveleth took control off a big hit, entering the offensive zone with speed and numbers and ending with an early goal for the Reds. Alexandria was caught on their heels with Eveleth pouring on the pressure early, burying two more to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the first intermission. The second started like a continuation of the first with Eveleth dominating the flow of play and extending their lead to four. Finally Alexandria got one back and seemed to have some life, scoring a second less than 5 minutes later. The Reds would get one back in the final minute of the period though to make it 5-2 heading into the third. Eveleth showed once again why they are considered one of the best hockey teams in the nation, dominating play again in the third and putting up two more to bury Alexandria in a five goal hole. To their credit, Alek didn’t just roll over and die, scoring once more in the third. The Eveleth Hockey Club is heading back to the Kellogg Cup Final where they will look to defend their title and become the first 3-time champs in MAHL history, defeating Alexandria by a score of 7-3.

St. Paul Athletic Club vs Mill City Hockey Club
For the fourth time this year the Saints and Millers will do battle, this time for a spot in the Kellogg Cup Final. St. Paul swept the season series 3-0 to take home the Pennant for the first time. This is a historic rivalry dating back to the sports origins in the state, but no game between them has been as important as this one. The St. Paul Hippodrome was filled to the gills as fans from both sides of the Twin Cities packed in to watch. The teams took the ice to a roaring crowd and it felt as if the building was shaking from the energy and noise. Adrenaline pumping through their veins, the first period was brutal. Both teams were making sure to finish their checks and there was plenty of stick play and extracurriculars from both sides. After 20 minutes of play the score was tied at one apiece. The Saints turned it on in the second, scoring three to the Millers one to make it a 4-2 after two. Things really opened up in the third with the teams going back and forth with goals. First Mill City scored, then the Saints, then the Millers to make it a one goal game again. Finally the game was put away when St. Paul Athletic found the back of the net off a deflection that went off a Miller’s skate and into his own goal to make it 6-4. The Saints would hold on for the final 7 minutes and change to secure their first ever birth in the Kellogg Cup Finals. The St. Paul Athletic Club makes it a clean season sweep over their arch rivals, ending Mill City’s season and getting their first shot at the Kellogg Cup.

Will Eveleth repeat and claim their third cup in the last 6 years or will St. Paul Athletic become the first champion from the Twin Cities not named Mill City?

Let me know what you think, comments are always appreciated!

Re: MAHL Redux

1912 Kellogg Cup Final

Eveleth Hockey Club vs St. Paul Athletic Club
The stage was set and the Hipp was rocking as the St. Paul Athletic Club took to their home ice to take on the mighty Eveleth Hockey Club. The puck was dropped and we were underway. The pace was high right from the jump with both teams getting early opportunities. Eveleth got on the board first and extended their lead to two before the Saints finally got one back in the final minute of the frame to make it 2-1 after one. St. Paul carried the momentum from their late goal into the second, scoring twice in the first five minutes before Eveleth would level the score at three. The next goal came in the third to put the Saints back in front. The Reds tied it once more at four and the crowd sat on the edge of their seats as the clock wound down in a tied hockey game. Every shot felt like it would be the winner with both teams getting chances turned aside. St. Paul Athletic found themselves in the offensive zone with under 2 minutes to play. A shot was fired from a ways out that hit a defenseman’s shin and didn’t make it on goal. The puck laid in the slot and was fought for by players from both teams. It was poked out and scooped up by a Saint who wasted no time firing it on goal. The shot was hard and low, beating the Eveleth goalie to the ice and crossing the goal line to give St. Paul Athletic a 5-4 lead with 1:25 left to play. Eveleth would go all out in the final minute to try and level the score once again, but to no avail. The crowd counted down the final moments until the referee blew his final whistle after 60 minutes of play.

The St. Paul Athletic Club has won the Kellogg Cup! The Saints are your 1912 MAHL champions, bringing the Cup back to the Twin Cities after a two year stint in the Iron Range.
